Chapter 10 - The True Family

As the golden afternoon faded into a peaceful twilight, a quiet knock sounded from the patio gate.

Caleb stood up to check the entrance. Standing at the latch was his mother, Eleanor. She wore a simple dark dress and carried no jewelry, looking older and far more fragile than she had two weeks prior.

“Caleb,” Eleanor whispered, her voice filled with hesitation as she stood outside the gate. “May I… may I come in?”

Caleb looked at her for a long moment. He didn't open the gate immediately. “Are you here as a Sterling director, Mother, or as a grandmother?”

Tears welled in Eleanor’s eyes. “I am here as a mother who failed her son… and a grandmother who wants to ask for forgiveness.”

Caleb looked back at Bruna, who gave him a small, compassionate nod from the table.

Caleb unlocked the latch and pulled the wooden gate open. “Come in.”

Eleanor stepped onto the stone patio slowly, her eyes falling on little Liam. She walked over to the table and knelt gently beside the boy’s chair, her hands shaking slightly as she looked at him.

“Hello, Liam,” Eleanor said softly. “I brought you something.” She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, beautifully carved wooden toy sailboat.

Liam looked at his mother, waiting for permission. Bruna smiled and nodded gently.

Liam took the toy sailboat with a small smile. “Thank you, Nana.”

Eleanor let out a soft, tearful laugh, pressing her hand to her heart as she looked up at Bruna and Caleb. “I spent so many years worrying about our family’s reputation… that I almost lost the only real family I had left.”

“The reputation was built on glass, Mother,” Caleb said gently, pulling out a chair for her at the table. “Real family is built on protection, respect, and love. As long as you remember that, you will always have a seat at this table.”

Eleanor sat down, wiping a tear from her cheek as she watched Liam race his wooden boat across the patio table. The sun sank low over the shimmering lake, casting a warm, golden glow over the four of them—a true family, healed, united, and stronger than ever before.
