Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush

Three weeks later.

The high-rise glass tower of Vance Holdings in downtown Manhattan looked down on the frozen city like an arrogant sentinel. At 8:45 AM, the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor was already filled with tension so thick you could choke on it.

Celeste Vance sat at the end of the long marble table, dressed in a sharp charcoal Saint Laurent suit, her posture rigid, her face an unreadable mask of cold composure. Beside her sat Nathaniel, looking noticeably thinner, dark purple circles bruising the skin under his eyes. He had spent the last twenty-one days blowing up my phone with desperate voicemails, alternating between tearful apologies, frantic promises, and veiled legal threats. I had blocked his number after the first forty-eight hours.

"Graham is late," Celeste remarked coldly to the board members, tapping her diamond-encrusted pen against the glass table. "As usual. His erratic behavior over the past month has become a serious liability to this firm. As the chair of the executive committee, I am calling this emergency session to vote on his immediate removal as CEO due to cognitive decline and personal misconduct."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through several board members who had been on Celeste’s payroll for over a decade.

"Mother," Nathaniel whispered, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. "Are you sure this is wise? What if Dad—"

"Be quiet, Nathaniel," she hissed under her breath. "Your father is bluffing. He doesn't have the stomach to destroy this company. He cares too much about his precious legacy."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Graham didn't walk in alone. He was flanked by three senior partners from one of the most formidable corporate litigation firms in the country. And walking directly behind them, dressed in a tailored navy blazer and carrying a leather portfolio, was me.

Nathaniel gasped, half-rising from his chair before catching himself. "Harper?"

Celeste’s eyes flared with pure, distilled poison. "What is the meaning of this? This is an executive board meeting. Security! Remove this trespasser immediately!"

"Sit down, Celeste," Graham’s voice rang out, clear, authoritative, and completely devoid of the hesitation that had defined him for thirty years. "Harper isn't trespassing. She’s here as a primary shareholder."

The room descended into utter chaos.

"What nonsense is this?" Celeste stood up, slamming both palms against the table. "She signed an annulment! She has no standing!"

"She never signed your illegal documents, Celeste," I said, stepping up to the foot of the table, looking directly into the eyes of the woman who had tried to drug and destroy me. "And pursuant to Section 14 of the Graham Vance Family Irrevocable Trust, the shares designated for Nathaniel’s marital estate were legally transferred into my name forty-eight hours ago."

"That's impossible!" Nathaniel cried out, his voice cracking. "Dad, you gave my shares to her?"

"You violated the core covenant of the trust, Nathaniel," Graham stated, taking his seat at the head of the table while his attorneys placed thick binders in front of every board member. "You participated in a conspiracy to commit felony assault, fraudulent coercion, and extortion against your lawful spouse. The trust agreement stipulates that any beneficiary found guilty of moral turpitude or criminal conspiracy against a fellow beneficiary forfeits all voting equity immediately."

"This is an outrage! You have no proof of these wild accusations!" Celeste shouted, turning to the other directors. "This is a domestic dispute! It has no place in this boardroom!"

"Page twelve of the binder in front of you, ladies and gentlemen," I announced calmly, opening my portfolio. "You will find a certified forensic report detailing the chemical composition of the cocktail Mrs. Vance administered to me on the night of December 14th. On page twenty, you will find the video transcript and digital stills from the internal surveillance system showing Mrs. Vance entering the suite with the sedative, forcing it upon me, and subsequently arranging the scene in Graham's bedroom."

Several board members gasped as they flipped open the folders. The color completely vanished from Celeste’s face. She looked at Nathaniel, but her son had buried his head in his hands, trembling.

"And finally," Graham added, locking eyes with his wife, "the flash drive attached to the back contains the audio recording from the library, where Mrs. Vance explicitly threatens to fabricate criminal charges unless an illegal non-disclosure agreement was executed. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office received a identical copy of this packet at 8:00 this morning."

Two men in dark suits quietly stepped through the boardroom doors, flashing gold shields to the room.

"Celeste Vance? Nathaniel Vance?" the lead investigator asked. "We have a warrant for your arrest."
