Chapter 2 - Behind the Polished Door

The silence that followed Nathaniel’s words hit me harder than the chemical burn still searing the back of my throat. "Mom, tell me what you want me to do." Not *What are you saying?* Not *Let me see my wife.* Just a spineless surrender wrapped in filial obedience. Three hours ago, he had promised before God and two hundred witnesses to love, honor, and protect me. Now, he was taking stage directions for my destruction.

Graham stood motionless beside the heavy mahogany dresser. His jaw was set like stone, the veins along his temples bulging against his silver-dusted hair. He held his phone low against his thigh, the red recording circle pulsing rhythmically in the darkened room. With his free hand, he pointed toward the wall sconce nearest the bed. Tucked into the ornate bronze filigree was a glass bead smaller than a shirt button. A pinhole lens, dead and glassy, aimed directly at the center of the mattress.

"Make noise," Graham whispered under his breath, his eyes urging me to fight through the chemical fog dragging down my limbs. "Loud, Harper. She has Nathaniel primed to kick the door in."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My head spun, the wallpaper’s damask pattern shifting like oil on water. "Get away from me!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, pitching my voice to sound frayed, terrified, and desperate. "Don't touch me! Graham, please!"

Graham slammed an open palm against the wall, the heavy thud rattling the framed oil paintings. "Stop this, Harper! You’re out of your mind! Put your clothes on!"

Outside, Celeste’s shrill tone cut through the oak door like a razor blade. "Did you hear that, Nathaniel? She’s stripping down in front of your father! She’s been targeting him since Thanksgiving! Break the lock, baby! We have to document this before she lies her way out of it!"

I scrambled to the corner by the tall windows, pulling the heavy velvet curtain around my shoulders, shivering violently. The drug Celeste had poured down my throat was peaking; cold sweat washed over my collarbone, and pins and needles pricked my fingertips. Graham moved quickly, dragging a wool blanket across the floor and tossing it near my feet to maintain the illusion of a struggle.

"The key is in the brass planter by the hallway credenza," Graham muttered, never taking his eyes off the hidden camera. "She has the master set in her pocket. Nathaniel won't break the door down; he’s too afraid of scratching the antique paneling. He’ll look for the key."

Sure enough, heavy footsteps rattled the floorboards outside, accompanied by frantic jingling. Nathaniel was panting, his voice trembling with a mixture of rehearsed fury and genuine terror. "Harper! What the hell are you doing to my dad?"

I looked at Graham. In the shadows, the man who had sat silently at the end of the rehearsal dinner table, ignored and belittled by Celeste for thirty years, looked entirely transformed. His hands were steady. His posture wasn't that of a broken husband, but of a man who had set a trap of his own.

He tapped the screen of his phone, ending the audio recording, and slipped it into his inner jacket pocket. Then, moving deliberately, he pulled his shirt collar askew and ripped two buttons free, scattering them onto the hardwood.

"What are you doing?" I choked out, panic flaring anew.

"Giving her the show she paid for," Graham said grimly. "If they open that door and see me standing calmly, she’ll know I warned you. She’ll claim you seduced me, I covered for you, and Nathaniel’s lawyers will file an annulment based on fraud and moral turpitude before breakfast. You’ll walk away with nothing, your reputation destroyed, facing criminal charges for assault."

"And if you play along?"

"If I play along, she brings the evidence out into the light," Graham whispered. "And that’s where we cut the wire."

The key scraped inside the brass lock cylinder. The deadbolt slid back with a sharp, sickening metallic thunk.
