Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Syndicate

The illusion had completely evaporated. The pristine, elegant, million-dollar wedding had transformed into an open-air crime scene.

Chloe was on her knees on the stage now. Margaret, my sister-in-law, had rushed up to her side, wrapping an arm around the trembling girl as Chloe pulled the white veil off her head and cast it aside as if it were on fire. She was hyperventilating, staring at the screen where another series of images began to cycle.

These were the pawn shop slips.

Over the last six months, several pieces of my late wife’s heirloom jewelry had vanished from our family safe—a diamond tennis bracelet, a sapphire pendant given to my wife by her grandmother. Albert had convinced Chloe that I was becoming senile, that I was misplacing things around the house, that I was no longer fit to manage my own affairs.

On the screen, clear security camera footage showed Albert standing at a counter on 4th Street, handing over my wife’s sapphire pendant and pocketing an envelope of cash.

"You stole Mary’s necklace," I said softly, stepping closer to him. "You convinced my daughter that her grieving father was losing his mind, while you took the jewelry her dead mother left her and sold it to pay off your sports betting debts."

Albert took a step back. The bravado was leaking out of him, replaced by the cornered, feral panic of a rodent with nowhere left to run.

"Chloe," he pleaded, turning his head toward the stage, his voice trembling with manufactured tears. "Chloe, baby, please! It was a mistake! I had debts from my previous business... they were threatening my life! I only did it to protect us! Everything else was real! I love you! You know I love you!"

Chloe slowly stood up with Margaret’s help.

She looked at him. Really looked at him.

For two years, he had hollowed her out. He had made her believe she was nothing without him. He had convinced her that my protective instincts were toxic control, that my warnings were jealousy, that her family was holding her back from a glamorous life. He had systematically dismantled her self-esteem until she sat quietly while he seated her own father by a trash can at her wedding.

"You told me..." Chloe choked out, her voice raw, shaking with an agony that tore through my heart. "You told me you bought that apartment in Boston for us."

"I did! I put the deposit down—"

"You wired my trust fund to an offshore account," she cried out, tears cutting dark tracks through her mascara. "You married another woman in Ohio! You called me an idiot! You told everyone I was an idiot who would drink poison!"

May you like

"Chloe, I was drunk! Frank was recording me without my permission!"

"Do not speak to her," I interrupted, my voice cutting through his lies like a cold razor. "You don't get to address her ever again."
