Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Con

"Albert is married?!" someone shouted from the left wing of the ballroom.

"Who the hell is Marcus?" another voice echoed.

Whispers erupted like wildfire through dry timber. Guests were on their feet now, standing on chairs, craning their necks, whipping out iPhones to record the giant twenty-foot projection. The polite veneer of a black-tie society wedding cracked down the center and shattered into jagged pieces.

I remained seated beside the trash can, my arms crossed, watching the screen shift to the next slide.

Now came the financial ledgers.

Miller had obtained the bank statements Albert thought were hidden behind an offshore trust in Belize. Up on the wall flashed wire transfer receipts.

*From: Chloe Sullivan Trust Fund.*

*To: Vance Holdings LLC.*

*Amount: $450,000.*

*Date: Three weeks ago.*

Right below that was an audio waveform. As the digital line danced across the screen, Albert’s voice boomed through the speakers once more. It was a secret recording Miller had captured in the lounge of the downtown Ritz two weeks prior.

*"Look, Frank,"* Albert’s recorded voice laughed, accompanied by the distinct clink of ice in a bourbon glass. *"The old bastard doesn't know anything. He thinks I’m a hedge fund manager from Boston. Chloe signed the power of attorney yesterday. As soon as the 'I dos' are done today, we liquidate her mother’s family estate and dump the property in the LLC. By the time they realize the money is gone, I’ll be on a flight to Lisbon and she’ll be stuck with two million in leveraged debt. She’s an idiot. She’d drink poison if I told her it was holy water."*

The word *idiot* bounced off the crystal chandeliers.

Chloe stumbled backward on the elevated stage. Her heel caught on the hem of her four-thousand-dollar Vera Wang gown, and she tumbled hard against the white floral arch. White roses and eucalyptus branches showered down over her veil like fallen snow.

"No..." she whimpered, clutching her chest. "No, no, no..."

Albert spun around in the center aisle, trapped between the stage and the back wall. His polished, patrician mask was completely gone now. The veins in his neck bulged against his starched wing collar, his face mottled with purple rage.

"It’s fake! It’s an AI deepfake!" Albert screamed, waving his arms wildly at the stunned crowd. "Listen to me! Chloe, listen to me! Your father made this! He’s trying to destroy us! He’s bitter because he’s broke, and he hates that I can give you the world!"

He turned his glaring, bloodshot eyes directly toward the back of the room. Toward me.

"You old piece of garbage!" Albert roared, pointing a trembling finger straight at my chest. "You sat there pretending to be a broken old dog, and you pulled this stunt?! I’m going to ruin you! I’m going to make sure you rot on the street!"

He took a menacing step toward me.

I didn't flinch. I slowly stood up from the metal folding chair.
