Chapter 4 - The Mark of Treason

The voice on the tape vanished into static, but Donna Isabella’s final words hung in the air like a noose.
I looked from the cassette player to Vanessa, whose face was completely drained of life. She sat on the cold floor, her diamond-encrusted fingers trembling against the marble tiles. The glamorous, cruel socialite who had slapped me across the face hours ago for simply breathing too loudly was now nothing more than a cornered rat.
Luca didn’t move. He stood over the table, staring down at the little plastic tape as if expecting his mother to speak again. When he finally looked up, his eyes were devoid of any human warmth. They were pitch black, reflecting the cold wrath of an executioner.
“You were seven years old,” Luca whispered. “Seven.”
“Luca, I was a child!” Vanessa wept, crawling toward his polished leather shoes on her hands and knees. “My father told me it was a game! He told me to leave the courtyard latch open so Santa Claus could drop off presents early! I didn’t know what they were going to do to your mother! I swear on my life, I didn't know!”
“You didn’t know then,” Luca said, his voice dropping an octave, terrifyingly even. “But you knew today.”
Vanessa choked on her sob, freezing mid-motion.
Luca pointed to the boxes scattered across the floor, then to the destroyed seam of the wedding dress. “You searched this house for three months under the guise of wedding planning. You turned every room upside down looking for whatever my mother might have left behind. And the moment you found this box, you hired an untraceable truck to turn it into ash.”
He stepped forward, towering over her. “You didn't just keep your father’s secret, Vanessa. You came into my home, slept in my bed, and agreed to wear my ring—all to protect the man who murdered my mother.”
“Luca, please! I love you!” she cried, grabbing the hem of his trousers. “Everything I did was so we could be together! If you found out, our marriage would be impossible! We would be enemies!”
“We were always enemies,” Luca said coldly.
He reached down, grabbed Vanessa by the collar of her gown, and hauled her to her feet with effortless, brutal strength. He didn’t strike her. Instead, he took her left hand in his.
The eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring on her finger sparkled under the chandelier.
With a slow, deliberate twist, Luca wrenched the ring from her finger. Vanessa cried out in pain as the band grazed her knuckle, but Luca didn't care. He held the glittering ring up for a moment, then dropped it onto the floor, crushing it beneath the heel of his Italian leather boot until the diamond popped out of its platinum setting with a sharp *crunch*.
“Take her to the cellar,” Luca ordered Marco, his voice colder than winter ice. “Strip her of her phone, her jewelry, and her shoes. Put two guards outside the iron door. If Don Bellini calls, tell him his daughter is waiting for him to collect her debts.”
“No! Luca! You can't do this to me! I'm a Bellini!” Vanessa shrieked as two burly enforcers dragged her backward across the polished stone. “My father will burn this entire city to the ground! You hear me? You're a dead man, Luca Moretti!”
Her screams faded as the heavy iron door leading to the mansion’s lower levels slammed shut.
Silence reclaimed the foyer.

I stood there, paralyzed, my fingers still resting lightly on the delicate hem of the wedding dress. I suddenly remembered my place—I was just a maid who had witnessed the darkest secret of the most dangerous man in the city.
