Chapter 6 - THE FATHER THEY TRIED TO DESTROY

The next two weeks were filled with meetings, court filings, and interviews.

Daniel's attorney worked with the authorities to secure the financial records. The accountant traced transfers between Margaret's consulting company, a property developer, and several accounts associated with the disputed land.

Some transactions appeared to have been made without proper authorization.

Others were accompanied by documents carrying signatures that Daniel denied having written.

The investigation was no longer simply about family money.

It was about whether a network of people had deliberately falsified records to gain control of valuable property.

Meanwhile, Vanessa's custody petition moved toward a preliminary hearing.

Her attorney argued that Daniel's long absences had created instability for Lily.

Evelyn responded with phone records, travel documents, financial statements, and messages showing that Daniel had remained involved in his daughter's life.

The court ordered that any immediate parenting arrangements prioritize Lily's safety and emotional well-being while the allegations were examined.

Daniel followed every instruction.

He didn't discuss the case publicly. He didn't post angry messages about Vanessa. He didn't tell Lily what to say.

He simply made sure she had a stable routine, regular medical care, and time with people she trusted.

One evening, while they were reading a story, Lily asked whether she had to return to the garden where the party had taken place.

"No, sweetheart," Daniel said. "You won't have to go anywhere that makes you feel unsafe without the adults responsible for you working it out properly."

"Will Mommy be there?"

"That depends on what the grown-ups decide is safe and appropriate."

Lily considered this.

"Can I still love Mommy?"

Daniel's eyes softened.

"Of course. You can love someone and still need them to treat you kindly."

She nodded and turned the page.

The following morning, Marcus arrived with new evidence.

"Patricia Sloan has handed over the recording," he said.

The audio came from a meeting between Vanessa, Margaret, and the consultant.

Daniel listened while Evelyn took notes.

Margaret's voice was unmistakable.

"Once the custody order is in place, the trustee will have to review the account. By then, the property sale will be complete."

Vanessa asked, "And Daniel?"

"He'll be too busy defending himself to stop anything."

A pause followed.

Then Vanessa asked, "What if Lily tells someone what happened?"

Margaret answered coldly.

"Children repeat what adults teach them. If she says something inconvenient, we explain that she's confused."

Daniel stopped the recording.

He stared at the table.

For the first time, he had proof that the cruelty Lily experienced might have been part of a deliberate effort to control the family's future.

But another voice appeared on the recording.

A man's.

Daniel recognized it from business meetings.

It belonged to Stephen Cole, a former partner at Hayes Development who had left the company years earlier after a dispute with Daniel's father.

Stephen was now an investor in the development project tied to the disputed land.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

"This connects the financial scheme to your former business partner."

Daniel felt the old pieces falling into place.

Stephen had been the man whose fraudulent accounting nearly destroyed his company months earlier. Daniel had believed the dispute was over when Stephen resigned and agreed to a settlement.

Apparently, it had never ended.

The investigator discovered that Stephen's company had made payments to Margaret's consulting business shortly before the trust transfers began.

The evidence suggested that the custody petition might have been one part of a larger effort to gain control of Lily's inheritance before the property sale was finalized.

Daniel's phone rang.

Vanessa.

He almost let it go to voicemail.

Then he answered.

"Daniel, I need to tell you something."

"What?"

"My mother says everything can still be fixed if we cooperate."

"Cooperate with whom?"

"Stephen Cole."

Daniel stood.

"How long have you been speaking to him?"

"Since last year."

"Why?"

Vanessa began crying.

"He promised my mother that the money would be protected. He said you would never lose Lily, and nobody would get hurt."

"You believed him?"

"I wanted to believe him."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Did you know they were falsifying documents?"

"No. Not at first."

"And later?"

Silence.

"Vanessa, did you know?"

"Yes."

The word came out barely above a whisper.

Daniel felt something settle inside him.

He had spent years trying to rescue their marriage from misunderstandings.

Now he understood that the truth had been in front of him all along.

"You need to tell Evelyn everything," he said.

"Will you forgive me?"

"I can't answer that now."

He ended the call.

That evening, Daniel sat on the porch while Lily played with a small stuffed rabbit.

She brought it over and placed it in his lap.

"This is Bunny. He's brave."

Daniel smiled.

"Is he?"

"He gets scared, but he stays."

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"That's a good kind of brave."

Lily climbed into the chair beside him.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"If someone is mean to me again, will you come?"

He pulled her into a hug.

"I will always do everything I can to protect you."

For the first time since the garden incident, she seemed to believe him.

Inside the house, Evelyn's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds, then hurried outside.

"Daniel, the court has received a new filing."

"What kind?"

"Stephen Cole is claiming that the trust documents are invalid and that Lily isn't entitled to the property proceeds."

Daniel looked toward the window where his daughter was laughing at her stuffed rabbit.

Stephen wasn't merely trying to escape accountability.

He was making one final attempt to take away the future Robert Hayes had built for his granddaughter.

And Daniel knew that the next hearing would determine far more than money.

It would determine whether the truth could survive a final assault from the people who had spent years trying to bury it.
