Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO WANTED TO ERASE A FATHER

By noon, Vanessa had transformed herself into the victim.
She posted a carefully worded statement on social media, explaining that she was enduring a "painful family misunderstanding" and asking the public to respect her privacy.
Within an hour, several friends had shared it.
One called her a devoted mother.
Another described Daniel as a man who had "suddenly returned and disrupted his daughter's peaceful home."
Daniel read the comments once, then put his phone away.
He wouldn't fight his wife through strangers on the internet.
He had something more important to do.
Evelyn arranged for a forensic accountant to examine the trust and for a court-approved process to preserve the family's financial records.
Meanwhile, the investigator, Marcus Reed, arrived at Daniel's house with a tablet.
"I've been looking into Margaret's business dealings," Marcus explained. "The money trail is complicated, but I found something interesting."
He showed Daniel a photograph of a commercial property in Connecticut.
The building was owned by a company registered under Margaret's maiden name.
"Why does that matter?" Daniel asked.
"Because the company was formed two months before the first transfer from your father's trust."
Marcus opened another file.
"The company has no employees, no visible operating business, and no clear source of income. Yet it received regular payments from accounts connected to Margaret."
"Money laundering?"
"Possibly. We shouldn't jump to conclusions until the accountant finishes tracing it."
Daniel studied the building.
A private education center occupied the ground floor. Upstairs were several offices.
"Is this connected to Lily's school enrollment?"
"It may be. The enrollment payment was made through the same company."
Daniel felt anger rise, but he kept his voice controlled.
"Find out who authorized it."
Marcus nodded.
Before he left, he handed Daniel a second folder.
"This concerns Vanessa."
Inside were copies of emails between Vanessa and a private family consultant named Patricia Sloan.
The emails discussed how to portray Daniel as an unstable parent.
One message read:
We need a clear narrative before he returns. Emphasize his absence, his work stress, and the fact that Lily has become difficult to manage.
Another read:
Once the emergency petition is accepted, we can move quickly on the school placement.
Daniel read the messages twice.
"She planned this before I came home."
"At least some of it," Marcus said.
"Why?"
Marcus hesitated.
"There's a possibility she was promised a financial benefit if the trust came under Margaret's control."
Daniel stared at the folder.
His wife had been willing to use their daughter as evidence against him.
That evening, Vanessa arrived at the house with Margaret and two suitcases.
Daniel opened the door but remained in the entrance.
"What are you doing here?"
Vanessa pushed past him.
"I'm taking Lily home."
"No."
She turned sharply.
"You cannot keep my daughter from me."
"I haven't. But after what happened yesterday, we're following Evelyn's advice. Any contact will be arranged in a way that keeps Lily safe and avoids another confrontation."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Don't you dare lecture us about safety. You're the one who abandoned your responsibilities."
Daniel looked directly at her.
"Where is the money from my father's trust?"
For a fraction of a second, Margaret's expression changed.
Then she laughed.
"What money?"
"Almost two million dollars."
Vanessa went pale.
Margaret recovered quickly.
"Those funds were being managed for Lily's benefit."
"Then why did you forge my signature?"
"I did no such thing."
Daniel held up the document.
"The signature is under examination."
Margaret's jaw tightened.
"You have no idea what you're accusing me of."
"Then you'll have no trouble explaining the transfers to the investigators."
Vanessa stepped between them.
"This is exactly why I filed the petition. You're becoming paranoid and aggressive."
"Because I found out you've been planning to send our daughter away?"
"We were arranging the best possible education for her."
"Without telling me?"
"You were never here!"
Her voice cracked across the hallway.
For a moment, the anger seemed to dissolve into something more complicated.
Then she looked toward the stairs.
"Where is Lily?"
"She's with a trusted caregiver."
Vanessa's face hardened.
"You hired someone to replace me?"
"No. I hired someone to make sure our daughter is cared for while we sort this out."
Margaret leaned close.
"You'll regret humiliating this family."
Daniel opened the door wider.
"You should leave."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You can't do this to me."
"I didn't pour water over Lily. I didn't forge my own signature. I didn't file false allegations."
He stepped aside.
"Those were your choices."
The two women left, but Margaret paused at the bottom of the steps.
"You think you're winning," she called. "You don't even know who you're dealing with."
Daniel watched them get into their car.
He had heard similar threats from men who tried to steal his company.
But this time, the people making them were his family.
Later that night, Daniel sat beside Lily as she prepared for bed.
She looked up from her storybook.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Is Grandma mad because I cried?"
"No."
"Is Mommy mad because you came home?"
Daniel took a breath.
"Mommy and Grandma are upset about things the grown-ups need to work out. None of that is your fault."
Lily studied him carefully.
"Will you still be my daddy if they say I'm bad?"
Daniel felt his throat tighten.
He kissed her forehead.
"Nothing anyone says can change that."
She finally smiled.
After she fell asleep, Daniel returned to the living room.
A new email waited in his inbox.
It had been sent from an anonymous account.
The subject line contained only four words.
ASK ABOUT THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
The message itself was even shorter.
Lily's birth records were amended six weeks after she was born. Vanessa knows why. Margaret paid for the change.
Daniel read it again.
Then he opened the attachment.
It was a scanned copy of a document bearing his daughter's name.
At the bottom was a signature that made his blood run cold.
His own.
But the date was a day he could remember perfectly.
He had been in Colorado, hundreds of miles away, attending his father's memorial construction project.
He had never seen the document.

Someone had used his identity to change his daughter's official records.
And whatever the document concealed, Vanessa and Margaret had been willing to steal nearly two million dollars to keep it hidden.
