Chapter 5 - A New Dawn

The following morning, the dark storm clouds parted, bathing the sprawling Moretti estate in brilliant golden sunlight. But inside the mansion, an entirely new order had taken hold.
By eight in the morning, Dr. Lorenzo had been stripped of his medical license by Luca’s high-ranking political allies and was currently undergoing interrogation in an undisclosed warehouse at the docks. Every staff member Vanessa had hired—from the private chef to the upstairs maids—had been paid off and dismissed.
Emily was in the sunlit kitchen, preparing fresh strawberry pancakes—Sofia’s favorite—when heavy footsteps approached.
Luca entered, dressed in a crisp charcoal button-down without a tie. He looked rested, though his eyes carried a fierce, renewed determination.
“Good morning, Emily,” he said, pouring himself a cup of black coffee.
“Good morning, Luca,” Emily replied, feeling a faint blush warm her cheeks at the use of his first name.
“I had our family physician, Dr. Hayes, examine Sofia an hour ago,” Luca said, leaning against the marble island. “He confirmed what you found. The drugs are already clearing her system. He believes that with intensive physical therapy and proper nutrition, Sofia will be walking without assistance in less than six months.”
Tears of pure relief welled in Emily’s eyes. “That’s wonderful news. That’s... truly a miracle.”
“It’s not a miracle,” Luca said, looking directly into her eyes. “It’s you. You paid attention when everyone else looked away. You listened to my daughter when her own father was blinded by duty and guilt.”
He set his mug down and took a thick leather-bound folder from under his arm, sliding it across the counter toward her.
“What is this?” Emily asked.
“As of today, you are no longer the housekeeper,” Luca said evenly. “This is a contract establishing you as Sofia’s primary legal guardian alongside myself, and the director of the Elena Moretti Children’s Foundation. Your salary is quadrupled, and your brother’s medical school tuition has already been paid in full through graduation.”

Emily gasped, backing away slightly. “Luca, no... I can’t accept this. I didn’t help Sofia for money! I love that little girl!”
“I know you do,” Luca said softly, his voice full of an emotion he could no longer hide. “That’s precisely why you’re the only person in the world I trust with her life. And perhaps... with mine.”
