Chapter 4 - The Evidence

The heavy iron front doors slammed shut, cutting off Vanessa’s hysterical shrieks. The estate fell into an eerie, heavy stillness, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace downstairs.
Emily walked down the grand staircase, holding the silver blister pack in her hand. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She was only a housekeeper, an orphan who had taken this job two years ago to support her younger brother’s college tuition, yet tonight she held the darkest secret of the Moretti dynasty.
Luca stood by the marble mantelpiece, staring into the flames. He looked exhausted, the sharp angles of his jaw tight with unresolved tension. When he heard her footsteps, he looked up.
“Emily,” he murmured. His voice was raw. “Is Sofia asleep?”
“She’s resting, sir,” Emily replied quietly, stopping a few feet away. “She was brave tonight. But... there is something you need to see.”
She extended her hand, revealing the blister pack.
Luca frowned, taking the foil sheet. “What is this?”
“Sofia told me Vanessa has been dissolving these into her milk every afternoon,” Emily said, her voice shaking with righteous anger. “She told Sofia they were vitamins. I had my brother, who is a pharmacology student, run the batch code yesterday because I had an uneasy feeling. Sir... it’s high-dose Baclofen combined with a central nervous system depressant. It induces severe muscular flaccidity in children. It was chemically paralyzing her legs.”
Luca went completely rigid. For five agonizing seconds, he didn't breathe. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
He stared at the small silver foil, his knuckles turning white as he crushed it inside his fist. The raw, primal agony on his face was terrifying.
“She was poisoning my child,” Luca choked out, his voice cracking. “In my own house. Under my own roof.”
“The doctor, Lorenzo... he was in on it, wasn’t he?” Emily asked softly.
“Lorenzo was bribed by Antonio to alter the diagnostic reports,” Luca said, closing his eyes in shame. “I trusted them. I brought a viper into our home because I thought Sofia needed a mother. I thought I was giving her a family.”
He turned toward Emily. Slowly, the feared mafia don dropped his head, his broad shoulders trembling under the weight of his guilt. “I almost destroyed my daughter, Emily. If it wasn’t for you... if you hadn’t translated Lorenzo’s slip of the tongue tonight... Sofia would have been shipped away to Switzerland by next month.”

“You didn’t know, Mr. Moretti,” Emily said instinctively, taking a step closer and placing a gentle, reassuring hand on his sleeve. “You’re a father who wanted what was best for her.”
Luca looked down at her small hand on his dark jacket. He reached up, covering her fingers with his warm, calloused palm. “You called me sir for two years,” he whispered softly. “Call me Luca.”
