Chapter 10 - Face to Face with Treason

"Not Lily," the mercenary stammered, his teeth chattering against the cold steel of the rifle. "The fiancée! Sophia! She didn't stay at the safe house! She came with Marco! They’re waiting at the helicopter pad on the south terrace!"
Leo moved up swiftly, his weapon trained on the surviving gunman while he quickly bound the man's wrists with tactical zip-ties. "Boss, if they have an extraction chopper, they aren't just trying to kill you. They’re preparing to broadcast your death to the Five Families to claim leadership by morning."
Elena emerged from behind the pillar, holding Lily securely in her arms. The little girl was trembling, but when she saw Dante standing unharmed, a tiny sigh of relief escaped her lips.
"Dante," Elena called out, her voice taut with urgency. "If they take off in that helicopter, Marco will trigger the contingency accounts. The entire city will fall into chaos."
Dante lowered his rifle and turned to Leo. "Take Elena and Lily through the canal tunnel. Call Vincenzo and the northern captains. Tell them the King is awake. Tell them to lock down every port, every bridge, and every private airfield in the state."
"Wait—what about you?" Elena gasped, stepping forward, her heart seizing with dread. "You're going up to the terrace alone?"
"Sophia thought she could bleed me dry while I smiled at her across the dinner table," Dante said, his voice dropping into a chilling register that made the hair on the back of Elena’s neck stand up. "She thought she could frame an innocent woman and murder an innocent child to crown herself queen. I owe her a wedding gift."
Elena caught his forearm, refusing to let go. Her grip was tight, desperate. "You promised me. You said after tonight, Lily and I would never have to be afraid again. If you die up there, Dante... who protects us?"
Dante stopped. His gaze dropped to her hand on his sleeve, then rose to meet her eyes. In the subterranean gloom, the ferocious brutality in his face melted into something raw, fierce, and undeniably protective. He reached out, his hand cupping the side of her neck, his thumb resting gently against the rapid pulse beneath her soft skin.
"I don't die easily, Elena," Dante whispered, leaning close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "I lived through months of poison because every time I closed my eyes, I heard your voice reading Lily stories in the garden. I survived because of you. Now let me finish this."
He leaned down and pressed a firm, protective kiss to the crown of Lily's head, then turned on his heel and disappeared into the emergency elevator shaft leading directly to the manor's rooftop.
Elena stood frozen, her chest heaving as Dante’s words echoed in the stone chamber.
*He heard me.* All those long, grueling months when she thought he was a comatose shell, trapped in his wheelchair while she tended to him with gentle care and natural remedies—he had been aware. He had known her touch. He had listened to her voice.

"Elena," Leo urged gently, tugging her toward the maintenance tunnel. "We need to go. If Dante says run, we run."
Reluctantly, her heart aching with an agonizing mixture of fear and hope, Elena turned toward the darkened escape hatch.
