Chapter 11 - The Venomous Dawn

The night sky above the estate was whipped into a frenzy by the roaring twin blades of an AugustaWestland helicopter idling on the private southern helipad. Frigid wind tore through the manicured hedges, flattening the grass and sending dead leaves swirling through the blinding floodlights.
Sophia stood near the open cabin door, her silk ivory evening gown ruined, smeared with mud and soot, but her face twisted into an expression of triumphant madness. Beside her stood Marco Moretti, Dante’s cousin—a sharp-featured man in a tailored charcoal suit, clutching a leather briefcase containing the family’s bearer bonds and encrypted cryptocurrency keys.
"The strike team went silent six minutes ago!" Marco yelled over the deafening whine of the turbine engines. "We have to leave now, Sophia! If that monster somehow crawled out of the basement—"
"He was poisoned to the marrow of his bones, you idiot!" Sophia shrieked back, her eyes dilated with frantic greed. "The venom takes six hours to paralyze the heart entirely! Even if he woke up for five minutes, his lungs are filling with fluid right now! He's dead! The estate is ours!"
"Is that what you told yourself while you stirred hemlock into my tea, Sophia?"
A voice—cold, resonant, and dripping with venomous wrath—cut through the screaming wind.
Sophia froze. The blood drained from her face until she looked like a walking corpse.
From the dark perimeter of the rooftop stairwell stepped Dante Moretti. He walked upright, tall and invincible, a shadow emerging from the abyss. Blood stained his dress shirt, but none of it was his own. In his right hand, he held a sleek black tactical pistol, the barrel pointed directly at Marco’s heart.
Marco dropped his briefcase in sheer terror, his hand fumbling for the revolver tucked inside his waistband. "Dante! Listen to me! It was her! Sophia planned the whole thing! She seduced me—she said you were dying anyway—"
*BANG.*
A single shot cracked across the helipad. Marco let out a strangled gasp, clutching his right shoulder as he spun and collapsed against the helicopter skid, writhing in agony.
Sophia backed away, trembling violently, her polished heels sliding on the wet asphalt. "Dante... please... I loved you! You were broken! You were never going to walk again! I only did what had to be done for the family—"
"You touched the girl," Dante said, taking one measured step forward. With every step, the sheer weight of his aura seemed to crush the oxygen from the air. "You touched Elena. You made my house a slaughterhouse."
"You won't kill me," Sophia gasped, a hysterical laugh tearing from her throat as she backed toward the open helicopter door. "You don't know the truth! You think Elena stumbled into your house by accident? You think that little girl is just a maid’s daughter?!"
Dante stopped in his tracks, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Speak."
Sophia sneered, venom replacing her terror as she reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, laminated photograph, waving it in the wind.
"Elena isn't just a maid, Dante!" Sophia screamed over the thunder of the helicopter blades. "Look at the records! Look at the child’s birthmark! Lily isn't her niece or an orphan from the streets! Five years ago, the night of your car crash... the night your brother died..."
Sophia’s words were suddenly drowned out by the thunderous roar of three black tactical gunships descending from the clouds above, their blinding spotlights trapping Dante, Sophia, and the helipad in a blinding cage of white light.
Over the gunships' loudspeakers, a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed across the terrace:

*"Step away from the asset, Dante Moretti. The Syndicate claims the child and the throne."*
Sophia smiled a sickening, victorious smile—just as the rear doors of the descending gunship slid open, revealing a masked sniper taking direct aim not at Dante, but toward the drainage canal below where Elena and Lily were running for their lives.
