Chapter 10 - The Hidden Contract

The entire boardroom erupted into chaotic shouting. Directors jumped to their feet, security guards reached for their radios, and Clara immediately stepped between Eleanor and the newcomers.

“Victoria Sterling has no legal standing in this building,” Clara stated firmly, her voice slicing through the noise. “Her divorce decree included an ironclad non-compete, non-disclosure, and total forfeiture of equity rights signed in 2012.”

Victoria laughed—a melodic, theatrical sound that sent a chill down the spines of the board members.

“Oh, Clara,” Victoria said, walking forward with graceful, predatory confidence. “You really are your mother’s daughter. So righteous. So competent. So tragically blind to how the real world works.”

Victoria snapped her fingers. Her lead litigator stepped forward, placing a thick leather-bound dossier on the blackwood table directly in front of Eleanor.

“That forfeiture was signed under the assumption that Julian was the sole heir apparent,” Victoria said, resting both manicured hands on the back of an empty chair. “However, three years ago, when your dear son Julian realized he was drowning in Russian debt, he didn't just steal from your foundation, Eleanor. He sold something far more valuable.”

Victoria pulled out a certified legal instrument stamped with the seal of the Supreme Court of the State of New York.

“He sold forty-nine percent of his future reversionary trust rights to an investment consortium registered in Zurich,” Victoria revealed, her smile widening into a triumphant sneer. “And who do you think owns ninety percent of that consortium? Me.”

Eleanor stared at the document. Her breathing grew shallow.

“Julian couldn't legally sell those rights,” Eleanor countered, though her voice lacked its usual certainty. “The trust stipulates that shares can only be transferred to blood relatives!”

“Precisely!” Victoria beamed. “Which is why the consortium was registered in trust for Vanessa Sterling! And now that Vanessa is in federal prison, her legal power of attorney over her assets was transferred—not to her father, and certainly not to you—but to her biological mother. Me.”

Victoria leaned across the table, locking eyes with Eleanor.

“Julian and Vanessa may be going to a federal penitentiary, Eleanor. But their forty-nine percent voting block now belongs to me. Combined with the institutional shares held by my partners in Zurich, I now control fifty-one point two percent of Sterling Global Enterprises.”

The room went dead silent. Several board members gasped.

“You have until five o'clock today to step down as CEO, Eleanor,” Victoria whispered, her eyes burning with unchecked triumph. “Or I will call a shareholder meeting tomorrow morning, liquidate the entire commercial real estate division, and leave you with nothing but your memories.”

Clara didn't panic. She stepped forward, picked up the legal instrument, and flipped directly to the final signature page. Her sharp eyes scanned the fine print, the notary seals, and the timestamps.

Then, Clara smiled.
