Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Coup

Three weeks later.
The high-rise headquarters of Sterling Global Enterprises towered seventy stories over Midtown Manhattan. Inside the panoramic boardroom on the top floor, twenty-four of the nation’s most powerful institutional investors, board members, and legal titans sat around a massive oval table made of imported African blackwood.
At the head of the table sat Eleanor Sterling. She wore an impeccably tailored navy suit, her hair coiffed, her posture commanding. Beside her sat Clara Vance, officially resigned from the state task force and appointed as Eleanor’s Chief Special Counsel.
The media storm had subsided, but the corporate stakes had reached a fever pitch. Today was the emergency shareholder vote to officially strip Julian and Vanessa of all board seats, revoke their trust fund beneficiaries, and authorize an unprecedented restructuring of the family trust.
“The evidence is incontrovertible,” Clara stated, tapping her tablet. The massive digital screens around the boardroom illuminated with forensic accounting trails, signed confessions from Adrian Cole, and federal wiretap transcripts. “Julian and Vanessa funneled over six hundred million dollars through twenty-two shell corporations over a seven-year period. Under corporate bylaws Article Nine, their shares are subject to immediate forfeit for gross moral turpitude and high treason against the corporation.”
The board members looked among themselves, nodding grimly.
“We are prepared to vote, Mrs. Sterling,” the lead outside director, Robert Sterling-Hayes, announced. “The motion to strip Julian and Vanessa of all titles, voting rights, and equity distributions is on the table. All in favor?”
Hands began to rise around the room.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the rear of the boardroom burst open.
A crisp, sharp laugh broke the solemn silence.
“I wouldn't cast those ballots just yet, gentlemen,” a smooth, accented voice purred.
Every head whipped toward the entrance.
Walking through the doors was a woman in her late forties, wearing a tailored crimson coat, dark sunglasses, and diamond earrings the size of quail eggs. Flanking her were four high-powered corporate litigators whose faces were regular fixtures on the covers of legal magazines.
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. Her fingers tightened on her cane.
“Victoria,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping into an arctic growl.
May you like
Victoria Sterling. Julian’s ex-wife, Vanessa’s mother—the woman who had supposedly vanished to Monaco twelve years ago after a high-stakes divorce settlement that paid her forty million dollars to surrender all claims to the Sterling name.
“Hello, Eleanor darling,” Victoria smiled, taking off her sunglasses to reveal cold, calculating gray eyes. “Did you really think my pathetic ex-husband and my foolish daughter were the brains behind this operation?”
