Chapter 6 - High Definition Truth

Lauren frowned. "What is that?"

Without answering, I swiped open my tablet and tapped the screen mirroring button. Instantly, the massive 75-inch smart television mounted above Eleanor's fireplace turned on. The screen flickered, displaying the split-screen security footage of my kitchen from the previous afternoon.

"Sarah, what childish game is this?" Eleanor snapped, stepping toward the television. "Turn that off!"

"Sit down, Mother," I said, my voice dropping to a register so freezing and authoritative that she actually froze mid-step.

I hit play.

The surround sound speakers boomed with the sudden, sharp clatter of the falling plate. On screen, Grace jumped back, her face crumpling in sheer terror.

Then came Lauren's voice, amplified in crisp, terrifying detail: *"You clumsy, useless little brat!"*

David set his wine glass down. The smirk on Lauren’s face vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, sickening paleness.

The video continued. The family watched in paralyzed horror as Lauren wrenched Grace's glasses off her face, threw them to the floor, and smashed them beneath her boot. The sickening crack reverberated through Eleanor's elegant dining room.

"Lauren..." David whispered, his head turning slowly toward his fiancée. "Did you... did you break a seven-year-old’s glasses?"

"David, wait, that’s not—she’s taking it out of context!" Lauren stammered, her voice shaking violently. "Sarah edited this!"

"Keep watching," I said.

The footage didn't lie. The camera cut closer as Lauren poured undiluted bleach onto the floor. The microphone picked up every cruel word, every scream from Grace, and every horrific sound of a weeping child being forced to scrub caustic chemicals with her bare hands. The crimson smears of blood on the floorboards were undeniable against the high-resolution 4K sensor.

Then came the part where Eleanor walked into the frame, sipping her tea, casually advising Lauren not to ruin the baseboards while her granddaughter bled at her feet.

Richard’s bourbon glass slipped from his fingers. It struck the Persian rug with a dull thud, amber liquid soaking into the fabric.
