Chapter 11 - The Visitor in the Dark

The audio recording crackled to life through my laptop speakers.
It was Lauren’s voice, speaking in a frantic, hushed whisper on a phone call:
*"I told you, the transfer goes through on the first of the month! Eleanor doesn't suspect a thing. She thinks the money is invested in Richard’s commercial bonds. Once the wedding happens, David's firm will handle the estate and I'll be completely covered. No one will ever audit the accounts."*
Then, a sudden background voice in the recording—Grace's sweet, innocent voice: *"Aunt Lauren? Who are you talking to?"*
A sharp intake of breath from Lauren. The phone call violently cut off.
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding against my ribs like a sledgehammer.
Grace hadn't broken the plate because she was clumsy. Grace had startled Lauren while Lauren was discussing a half-million-dollar felony fraud against her own parents. Lauren had attacked Grace, destroyed her glasses, and silenced her with trauma not out of anger, but to ensure that my daughter was too terrified, broken, and discredited to ever repeat the words she had overheard.
"Mom?"
Grace’s sleepy voice drifted from the top of the stairs. She was standing in her pajamas, rubbing her eyes. "I heard a noise outside."
"Go back to bed, baby," I said, my voice shaking as I closed the laptop. "Mommy is right here."
Grace nodded and disappeared back into her room.
I stood in the center of the dark kitchen, the laptop clutching against my chest. My hands trembled. This wasn't just child abuse anymore. This was a criminal conspiracy that involved Eleanor’s entire life savings, money that had disappeared into the hands of dangerous people Lauren owed debts to.
Suddenly, a chime rang out from my phone.
*Smart Home Alert: Motion detected at back perimeter.*
I froze.
I tapped the security app. The rear garden camera feed popped up.
A tall figure dressed in dark clothing was standing directly beside the kitchen sliding glass door, holding a pair of heavy bolt cutters.
Before I could press the emergency dispatch button, the entire screen flashed static.
*Camera 1: Offline.*
*Camera 2: Offline.*
*Camera 3: Offline.*
The entire house plunged into pitch-black darkness as the main circuit breaker outside was cut.

Downstairs, from the shadows of the kitchen right below where Grace was sleeping, came the slow, deliberate sound of the glass sliding door sliding open—followed by a cold, familiar voice whispering into the dark:
"You should have left the boxes in the basement, Sarah."
