Chapter 8 - On His Knees

The sight of the handcuffs dangling from the deputy’s utility belt finally shattered whatever fragile remnants of Preston’s sanity remained.
The arrogance, the vanity, the expensive suits, the sneering contempt—it all dissolved into the pathetic reality of who he truly was: a frightened, hollow boy who had stolen another man's shoes and thought he was a giant.
"No... please, no," Preston sobbed, his knees buckling.
He didn't just fall; he collapsed completely, dropping onto all fours directly in front of me. His tailored Italian trousers soaked into the cream and bread pudding smeared across the floorboards. The sticky bourbon glaze coated his knees and the palms of his hands.
"Warren... Dad... please," he wept, looking up through tear-blurred eyes. "I’m sorry! I swear to God I’m sorry! I was drunk! I was stressed about the fund! You know how much pressure I’ve been under!"
He reached out, his sticky, pudding-stained fingers trying to clutch at the hem of my trousers. "I’ll do whatever you want! I’ll step down from Apex! I’ll clean this up right now! Look!"
In a grotesque display of desperation, Preston actually lowered his head toward the floor, dragging his sleeve across the spilled dessert in a frantic attempt to wipe it away. "I’ll clean it! I swear! Just don't send me to prison! Ellie, please! Tell your father! I love you! I’ve always loved you!"
Ellie looked down at him. There was no joy on her face. No smug satisfaction. Only the deep, sorrowful pity one feels when watching a rabid dog finally put down.
"You don't love me, Preston," she whispered. "You never did. You loved the idea of controlling a woman you thought was too weak to leave. You loved spending money you didn't earn. And you loved making my father feel small because deep down, you knew you could never be half the man he is."
She pulled the platinum diamond wedding ring off her left finger. It made a sharp, clinking sound as she dropped it into the puddle of melted cream right beside his trembling hand.
"Keep it," Ellie said. "You'll need the bail money."
"Deputies," Amanda Cole said calmly. "Please escort Mr. Miller off the property. He may take his wallet, his personal identification, and the clothes on his back. Everything else is subject to the court freeze."
The two deputies stepped forward, grabbed Preston under his armpits, and hauled him to his feet. He shrieked, kicking his legs, leaving wet, sticky tracks across the gleaming floor as they dragged him down the long hallway toward the elevator. His screams echoed down the corridor until the heavy steel doors slid shut with a final, muffled chime.
