Chapter 6 - The Legal Reckoning

Preston’s phone began ringing again. This time it was his personal attorney, Greg Hauser.
Preston snatched the phone, putting it on speaker in a frantic bid to regain some semblance of control. "Greg! Thank God. Listen, Horizon Crest just breached their contract. Richard Sterling pulled out of Oakwood without notice. I want an injunction filed in federal court first thing tomorrow morning!"
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. A heavy, exhausted sigh crackled through the speaker.
"Preston," Greg said, his voice flat and clinical. "Where are you right now?"
"I’m at home! What kind of question is that? Did you hear what I said? File the emergency injunction!"
"Preston... I just received an email from the clerk of the Delaware Chancery Court," Greg said quietly. "Vance Trust filed an ex parte petition forty minutes ago. They invoked the master audit clause on your private fund, Apex Capital Partners."
Preston froze. "The... the master audit clause?"
"They froze every corporate account, Preston. Operating accounts, payroll, client escrows. All of it. The forensic accountants are already at your downtown office with a court-appointed receiver and two federal marshals."
"Why?!" Preston screamed, his voice cracking violently. "On what grounds?!"
"Embezzlement, Preston," Greg replied bluntly. "They have three years of bank transfers showing you moved two point four million dollars from the client reserve fund into personal offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to cover your margin losses on crypto futures. How the hell did Vance Trust get access to those routing slips?"
Preston dropped the phone. It clattered against the hardwood floor, landing right in the middle of the sticky pool of cream and bread pudding.
"Greg?" the phone squawked from the floor. "Preston, are you there? Look, if this is true, I can’t represent you. It’s a direct conflict of interest. My firm does corporate retainer work for Vance affiliates. You need to hire a criminal defense lawyer. Tonight."
The line went dead with a soft click.
The room seemed to shrink. Preston stared down at his phone, surrounded by the mess he had created. His breathing was shallow, his pupils dilated with terror.
He slowly looked up at me. "Criminal charges?" he whispered, his knees trembling violently. "Warren... please. You wouldn't put Ellie's husband in prison. Think of the scandal. Think of our family name!"

"You stopped being family the moment you thought kindness was weakness," I said.
