Chapter 10 - The Hidden Benefactor

Arthur turned the laptop toward me.
On the screen was a detailed transaction ledger for 'Peterson Heritage Holdings.' A wire transfer of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars had cleared just forty-eight hours before Thanksgiving.
The sending entity wasn't a bank, an investor, or a client.
It was a trust account registered under the name: *Helena Adams-Sterling Estate.*
My heart stopped beating.
Helena Adams was my mother’s sister—my Aunt Helena. She had vanished from our family’s life twenty-two years ago following the fatal car crash that took my parents. I had spent my entire youth believing she had taken her portion of the inheritance and abandoned me to the foster care system.
"Why would my aunt wire three-quarters of a million dollars to my husband's private account?" I whispered, my hands trembling against the kitchen counter.
"That's not the worst of it," Arthur said, his voice lowering. "The memo line on the transfer wasn't for an investment. It had a file tracking code that corresponds to an ongoing probate petition in Cook County."
Arthur clicked open another window, revealing a sealed court filing from two weeks ago.
"Mark didn't just plan to divorce you, Chloe," Arthur said quietly. "He was working with an outside party to challenge the validity of your grandfather’s trust. They were preparing to claim you were mentally unfit, strip you of Lily's custody, and place the entire Adams estate into a conservatorship."
The room seemed to spin.
The Thanksgiving dinner wasn't just a family gathering where tempers flared. The cruelty, the isolation, the constant attempts to make me feel small and unstable—it was all calculated. Megan’s slap wasn't an accident. They were trying to push me to the edge, trying to make me react violently so they could call the police on *me*.
If I hadn't kept my composure, if I hadn't called Zoe...
"Who was the attorney who filed this petition on Mark's behalf?" I asked, my voice barely audible through the roar of blood in my ears.

Arthur looked directly into my eyes.
"Not an attorney, Chloe. Your aunt Helena is back in Chicago. And she’s the one who gave Mark the keys to destroy you."
