Chapter 5 - The Law Comes to Dinner

The arrival of uniforms shattered what little composure Eleanor had left. She clutched her pearl necklace with trembling, claw-like fingers.

"Police? In my dining room on Thanksgiving? Have you lost your mind, Chloe?" Eleanor shrieked. "This is a private family disagreement! Nobody was assaulted!"

"Officer," Arthur Vance stepped forward, pulling a high-resolution digital tablet from his briefcase. "My client, Chloe Adams-Peterson, was locked out of her own residence alongside her five-year-old daughter, Lily. Prior to the expulsion, Mrs. Megan Peterson-Ross struck the minor child across the face with significant force, resulting in clear contusions."

Arthur tapped the screen and held it out for the sergeant.

While they were eating, Zoe had used her smartphone to capture macro photographs of Lily’s cheek under the entryway lights. The screen showed clear, violent red fingerprint marks across my child's pale skin.

Sergeant Reynolds' face hardened. He turned toward the table. "Which one of you is Megan Peterson-Ross?"

Megan looked like she was going to throw up. She hid behind her husband, Greg, who had remained frozen like a coward the entire evening, not daring to utter a single syllable.

"Officer, wait!" Mark jumped between the sergeant and his sister. "This is a misunderstanding! My sister was disciplining Lily! The child threw a tantrum and Megan tried to restrain her—"

"Restrain her?" I interrupted, my voice cutting through Mark’s lies like a razor. "Lily reached for a dinner roll, Mark. She said, 'Auntie Megan, can I please have bread?' And Megan told her that spoiled brats eat after the adults, and when Lily sniffled, Megan backhanded her across the mouth."

"She’s lying!" Megan screamed, her voice cracking into hysterics. "She attacked me! Look at my face! She hit me twice!"

Sergeant Reynolds didn't blink. "Ma'am, did you strike the five-year-old child first?"

"She was disrespectful!" Megan sobbed, tears finally smearing her mascara. "She’s not even Mark’s biological child! Why should I treat her like royalty in our house?"

A dead, suffocating silence fell over the room.

Even Eleanor gasped and pulled her hand back from Megan’s shoulder.

Mark closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against the dining room wall. He knew he had just lost everything.

Lily had been adopted by Mark and me when she was fourteen months old. Mark had signed the adoption decree. He had sworn an oath before a judge to love and protect her as his own blood. And his family had spent four years using that adoption as a quiet weapon to remind me that Lily was "second-tier."

Sergeant Reynolds stepped around the table, his hand resting casually on his utility belt. "Megan Peterson-Ross, step away from the table and put your hands behind your back."

"What?" Megan shrieked, backing toward the patio doors. "Greg! Do something! Mark!"

Greg stepped sideways, deliberately looking away from his wife. He was an accountant; he knew how math worked, and he knew who signed the checks.

"Ma'am, do not make me use force on Thanksgiving," the sergeant said evenly. "You are being placed under arrest for domestic battery and child endangerment."
