Chapter 10 - The Desperate Knock

An hour later, I was sitting at my kitchen island, sipping a cup of black coffee while the gentle hum of the dishwasher ran in the background. Colton was fast asleep upstairs, tucked safely beneath his dinosaur comforter, his stomach full and his heart at ease. My wife, Sarah, had listened in stunned disbelief as I recounted the events of the evening.

"She really tried to starve our son in your own restaurant?" Sarah had asked, her eyes flashing with a protective fury that rivaled my own.

"She tried," I answered quietly. "And she learned what happens when the scapegoat stops playing along."

Right on cue, the silence of our quiet suburban street was shattered by the screech of tires, followed by the heavy, frantic pounding of fists against our front door.

I glanced at my watch. 9:45 PM.

Sarah stood up, but I placed a gentle hand on her arm. "Stay here. I'll handle this."

I walked to the foyer, opened the solid mahogany front door, and found Jolene, Paige, and Greg standing under the porch light. They looked like refugees from an emotional war zone. Paige’s mascara had run down her cheeks in dark, muddy streaks. Greg looked disheveled, his tie undone and his collar torn. Jolene was trembling, her eyes wide with a volatile mixture of rage, humiliation, and terror.

"You monster!" Jolene exploded the second the door opened, lunging forward as if to strike me, but stopping when she saw the unmoving wall of steel in my eyes. "You humiliated us! Do you have any idea what we just went through?!"

"I assume you paid your bill," I said, leaning casually against the doorframe, my voice devoid of emotion.

"We had to pawn Greg’s Breitling watch at a twenty-four-hour cash lender across town just to keep that manager from having us arrested in handcuffs!" Paige cried, her voice cracking into hysterical sobs. "People were recording us on their phones, Dustin! Sarah Henderson from my country club was sitting right there! My life is ruined! My reputation is gone!"

"Your reputation was built on a foundation of lies, Paige," I replied coolly. "You live in a house you can't afford, lease cars with balloon payments, and treat everyone around you like dirt to make yourself feel superior. Tonight, reality caught up with you."

"I am your mother!" Jolene bellowed, her voice echoing into the quiet night. "I gave you life! I sacrificed for you! And you cast me aside and degraded me over a damn cheeseburger for a spoiled little boy!"

"Do not speak about my son," I snapped, taking a single, commanding step forward. The sheer intensity in my voice forced Jolene to stumble back a step. "Colton didn't ask for much. He asked for a slider. And you told him he was unworthy. You have spent twenty years reminding me that I was second-best, that Paige was the golden child, that Greg was the success story. You treated Sarah like an outsider, and tonight you tried to pass that generational abuse onto my six-year-old child."

"We made a mistake, okay?!" Greg pleaded, stepping forward, his hands clasped as if praying. "Look, Dustin, I'm sorry. We’re all sorry. But you have to fix this. Call your manager. Tell him to reverse the charges or buy back the watch. That watch was an heirloom from my uncle!"

"You should have thought about your uncle before you ordered two-hundred-dollar bottles of wine on an empty bank account, Greg," I said with total disgust.

"You have no heart," Jolene wept, wiping her eyes with shaking hands. "Your father would turn in his grave if he saw what a cold, vindictive man you've become. He left us with nothing, and here you are hoarding wealth while your sister drowns!"

A dark, dangerous smile crossed my lips.

"Is that what you still tell yourself, Jolene?" I asked quietly. "That Dad left us with nothing?"
