Chapter 4 - The VIP Protocol

For the next twenty minutes, Paige and Jolene preened.

They sipped on a two-hundred-dollar bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, loudly discussing Harper’s elite private school tuition and Greg’s upcoming country club tournament. Whenever Colton tried to whisper to Leah, Jolene would shoot him a venomous look and say, "Shh! Well-behaved children are seen, not heard."

Colton hadn't touched the bread basket. It sat between us, cold and stiff, an insulting monument to Jolene’s cruelty. Leah had her arm wrapped tightly around Colton’s shoulders, whispering stories about his favorite superheroes into his ear to keep his spirits from breaking entirely.

Then, the double swinging doors of the kitchen burst open.

A hush rippled across the dining room. Executive Chef Connor Walsh, dressed in pristine, custom-tailored black chef whites with the restaurant’s gold lantern insignia embroidered over his heart, strode out onto the floor.

Behind him marched three senior servers, each carrying massive, polished silver platters with domed cloches.

Jolene’s eyes widened behind her spectacles. She straightened her posture, instantly assuming the regal posture of a woman about to receive personal homage.

"Oh, my goodness," Jolene whispered excitedly, nudging Paige’s arm. "Look! That's Connor Walsh himself! He must have seen my name on the guest ledger. I told you, Paige—the social registry always gets you the royal treatment."

Paige quickly fixed her lipstick in her compact mirror. "Should we ask for a photo for Instagram? It would make the country club mothers sick with envy."

Greg cleared his throat, puffing out his chest. "Let me do the talking. I know how to speak to these high-profile culinary guys."

Connor approached Table Four with an unreadable expression. His imposing frame towered over the booth. The surrounding tables fell quiet, watching the restaurant’s celebrity owner make a rare personal appearance in the dining room.

Jolene beamed her most charming, aristocratic smile. "Chef Walsh! What an absolute honor. I must say, the ambiance tonight is almost as exquisite as my family’s standards. You really didn't need to come out here just to greet us, but we truly appreciate the VIP gesture—"

Connor didn't even look at her.

Without a single word of acknowledgment to Jolene, Paige, or Greg, Connor stepped directly around the table. He stopped right beside Colton.

Then, in full view of the entire room, the celebrated executive chef dropped down to one knee, bringing himself exactly to eye level with my terrified, wide-eyed six-year-old son.

"Good evening, Colton," Connor said, his voice deep, warm, and booming with genuine affection.

Colton blinked, stunned. "Mr. Connor?"

"I heard a rumor that my favorite food critic was sitting at Table Four," Connor smiled, reaching up to gently tap Colton’s nose. "And my kitchen staff was about to riot because someone told them you were only getting sourdough bread. Do you think I'd let my best friend’s son eat bread when I have the best beef in the state?"

Connor snapped his fingers.

The server behind him stepped forward and lifted the heavy silver dome with a theatrical flourish.

Sitting in front of Colton was an immaculate culinary masterpiece: three miniature A5 Japanese Wagyu sliders on gilded brioche buns, a mountain of hand-cut truffle fries dusted with edible gold leaf, a crystal bowl of house-made strawberry gelato, and a smoking, vibrant blue mocktail garnished with fresh berries and an illuminated lantern straw.

"Compliments of the kitchen, Colton," Connor said softly. "Made specially for you by me."
