Chapter 7 - Truth Bombs and Broken Illusions

Vanessa’s breathing turned shallow and rapid. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks.

"He told me... he promised me that after the baby was born, you would grant an uncontested divorce," she sobbed, clutching her stomach. "He said you were cold, unloving, that you never wanted Owen, and that you forced him to adopt because you were barren and hated children!"

A dark, bitter laugh escaped my throat. "I spent three years enduring agonizing IVF cycles, Vanessa, until the doctors told me another round would destroy my kidneys. Adopting Owen was the happiest day of my life. And Graham? Graham refused to even hold Owen’s hand in public until my father agreed to write a two-million-dollar check to his logistics firm."

I walked closer, looking down at the girl who thought she had secured her golden ticket.

"Did Judith tell you about their plan for Owen?" I asked.

Vanessa looked up, sniffing, her lower lip quivering. "She... she just said we’d have full custody. She said Owen needed a real mother and a stable home, and that with custody, Graham would receive the child support trust dividends from your father's estate."

"There it is," I said coldly. "The child support dividends. You thought Judith liked you? You thought she cared about you or that baby in your womb? Judith doesn't care about anyone who doesn't come with a bank routing number. The moment you deliver that boy, Judith and Graham planned to use both children as financial bargaining chips to bleed my family dry."

Vanessa dropped her head into her hands, wailing. "I didn't know! I swear to God, Claire, I didn't know he was stealing from you! He bought me this jewelry... he told me we were safe!"

"You're not safe," I told her plainly. "In seventy-two hours, the U.S. Marshals and the county sheriff will serve an eviction notice on this property. The Mercedes will be repossessed by sunrise tomorrow. If you want to avoid being indicted as an unindicted co-conspirator in federal wire fraud, you have exactly one option."

Vanessa looked up, her tear-stained face desperate. "What? Tell me! Please, I have nothing of my own! My mother is sick in Ohio, I have no savings left, Graham made me quit my job!"

"You give me everything," I commanded. "Every text message, every email, every receipt, every piece of jewelry Graham bought you with my stolen money. And on Tuesday morning, you walk into Marcus Vance’s office and give a sworn deposition detailing every promise Judith and Graham made to you regarding their scheme to extort child support from my trust."

"If I do that..." Vanessa stammered, "what happens to my baby?"

"If you cooperate," I said, softening my voice just a fraction, "I will ensure you have a comfortable apartment, your medical bills are paid through delivery, and you have enough funds to start over with your child in Ohio, far away from the Sterlings. But if you protect Graham, you will give birth in a federal corrections medical ward."

Vanessa didn't hesitate for more than three seconds. She scrambled off the sofa, rushed toward the bedroom, and returned carrying an iPad, a leather-bound journal, and a velvet jewelry box.

"Take it," she cried, shoving them into my hands. "Everything is on the cloud drive. Judith even sent me a voice memo last week telling me how to act during the custody evaluation! Take it all! Just don't let them send me to prison!"

I took the iPad and the journal, checking the screen. The evidence was damning. Judith had literally sent written scripts instructing Vanessa on how to testify that I had threatened her life.

"Pack your bags, Vanessa," I said, turning toward the door. "A transport van will pick you up at noon tomorrow. Choose wisely whose side you’re on."

As I walked out of the house, the cool morning breeze felt clean against my skin. The perimeter of the enemy was crumbling. Now it was time to hit the heart of their empire.
