Chapter 4 - The Ambush at Home

I didn't sleep at Marcus’s office, nor did I hide in a hotel like a battered victim waiting for the storm to blow over. Marcus assigned two private security operatives, veteran ex-law enforcement officers named Frank and Miller, to accompany me back to my estate in Oakridge.

The house sat on a secluded hill, built with my father’s money, deeded entirely in my name prior to our marriage. Graham had never contributed a single dime to the mortgage, the property taxes, or the maintenance. He was merely an occupant who had overstayed his welcome.

By eight o’clock that evening, Owen was safe upstairs in the care of Maria, our trusted housekeeper of fifteen years, who wept when she saw the bruise on Owen’s elbow and immediately set out baking his favorite chocolate chip cookies.

Downstairs, the front door rattled violently before swinging open with a deafening crash.

Graham stumbled into the grand foyer, his tuxedo tie undone, hair disheveled, and his face pale with a mix of fury and sheer panic. Behind him strode Judith, looking completely healthy for someone who had allegedly suffered chest pains two hours earlier, her eyes blazing like coals.

"You spiteful, arrogant bitch!" Judith screeched, tossing her designer clutch onto the antique console table. "Do you have any idea the humiliation you caused our family today? The Van Der Bilts are royalty! Grant walked away from my daughter at the altar, and it’s all because you couldn't control that little charity case you call a son!"

I sat calmly in the wingback chair by the unlit fireplace, a cup of herbal tea in my hand. Frank and Miller stood unobtrusively in the shadows near the kitchen entryway, silent as stone statues.

"Get out of my house," I said evenly.

Graham stepped forward, his fists clenched, trying to loom over me the way he always did when he wanted to intimidate me into writing a check.

"Don't give us that attitude, Claire! You cancelled the corporate accounts! My card was declined at the hotel! I had to leave my watch as collateral just to get Mom out of the venue! How dare you humiliate me in front of my peers?!"

"Your watch?" I tilted my head. "The Patek Philippe I bought you for your thirtieth birthday? How tragic."

"You listen to me," Judith hissed, stepping into my personal space, her bony finger pointed directly at my face. "You are Graham’s wife. Everything you have belongs to this marriage. You will call the hotel right now, you will pay the remaining balance, and you will publicly apologize to Grant’s family, claiming Owen had an emotional outburst because he's disturbed! If you don't, I will go to Child Protective Services tomorrow morning and report you for child neglect!"

I looked down at her shaking finger, then slowly raised my eyes to meet hers.

"You really want to play the Child Protective Services card, Judith?"

Judith sneered. "We already have the narrative built, darling. A wealthy, neurotic woman who adopted an orphan to fill an empty void, neglecting him while she travels for business. Who do you think the courts will believe? You, or a devoted grandmother and father who just want to provide a wholesome, loving family environment?"

"And what about Vanessa?" I asked quietly.

The color instantly drained from Judith’s face. Graham took a sharp step backward, stumbling over the edge of the Persian rug.

"What... what did you say?" Graham croaked.

"Vanessa Lynn Croft," I repeated every syllable clearly. "The twenty-six-year-old mistress you installed in the house at 412 Whispering Pines. The one currently carrying your child. The one Judith promised would give you a 'real Sterling heir.'"

Judith’s mouth opened and closed like a dying fish. "You... you've been spying on us!"

"No," I replied, standing up to my full height. I was taller than Judith, and with the righteous fury of a betrayed mother, I felt ten feet tall. "Your grandson recorded your entire conversation, Judith. Every word of your plan to drug me, frame me, and steal my inheritance. It's already in the hands of the District Attorney."

Graham collapsed against the wall, clutching his chest. "Claire, wait... baby, listen to me. It's not what you think. Vanessa is nothing! She seduced me! Mom pushed me to do it, she said we needed an heir—"

"Graham, shut up!" Judith shrieked, swatting at his arm.

May you like

"No, Graham, keep talking," I said, cold amusement dripping from my voice. "Because every room in this house has audio and video surveillance. And you just confessed to conspiracy on camera."
