Chapter 5 - The Guillotine Falls

The grand boardroom of the NordTech assembly held over eighty executives, investment bankers, and European Union industrial attachés.
Sophia Vance sat at the head of the Vance Holdings delegation table, her knuckles white as she gripped her Montblanc pen. Beside her, Ethan looked like a man standing on the scaffold waiting for the trapdoor to drop. Every five seconds, his wide, terror-stricken eyes darted over to where I sat at the center of the Quinn Global contingent.
"Delegates," the Swedish board chairman announced through the audio system. "We will now hear the final acquisition pitches. Vance Holdings International has proposed a total valuation of €1.2 billion, supported by syndicate financing from New York and offshore capital vehicles."
Sophia stood up. She tried to project authority, but her voice carried a tremor she couldn't entirely mask.
"Thank you, Chairman," Sophia began, clearing her throat. "Vance Holdings offers NordTech an immediate gateway into North American infrastructure. Our capital structure is ironclad, audited by our top-tier legal team led by Mr. Ethan Walker, and backed by thirty years of industrial excellence."
She clicked her remote, displaying glowing balance sheets on the panoramic projection screens.
"We guarantee no operational redundancies, complete board autonomy, and an immediate cash injection of €400 million within forty-eight hours of closing."
A polite murmur swept through the room. Ethan let out a tiny, shuddering breath, perhaps foolishly believing that the sheer weight of Vance capital would protect them.
The Chairman nodded. "Thank you, Miss Vance. We now yield the floor to Director Claire Quinn of Quinn Global."
I rose from my seat.
I didn't open a PowerPoint. I didn't hand out glossy brochures. I simply walked to the center of the room with a single red folder in my hand.
"NordTech’s proprietary satellite mesh is designed for high-latitude navigation and military logistics," I began, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the hall. "It requires complete regulatory transparency under EU Directive 42. Any entity acquiring this technology must maintain spotless financial hygiene."
I opened the folder.
"Forty-eight hours ago, Vance Holdings initiated a targeted short-selling attack on Quinn Global stock using a media subsidiary based in Dublin. Why? Because Vance Holdings did not have the €400 million cash reserves promised in their tender. They intended to fund this acquisition by manipulating our market cap and dumping offshore promissory notes into NordTech’s treasury."
Sophia shot to her feet, her face contorting with rage. "This is slander! Chairman, I demand this woman be silenced! She is bringing personal, domestic vendettas into an institutional tender!"
"Is it slander, Miss Vance?" I asked, looking up calmly.
I tapped the control tablet on the lectern. The main screens flipped instantly from Vance’s colorful charts to bank wire confirmations, encrypted WhatsApp chat logs, and signed Cayman Island trust manifests.
At the very bottom of each illegal transaction document was a signature.
*Ethan Walker, Esq.*
Gasps erupted across the room. Several European Union observers immediately stood up, whipping out their phones to contact regulatory enforcement.
"These documents were verified this morning by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority," I continued, looking directly at Ethan. "Over the past three years, Mr. Ethan Walker laundered sixty-two million dollars of illicit offshore capital through Vance shell companies, directly evading transatlantic sanctions. And Vance Holdings used those tainted funds to underwrite their bid for NordTech."
Sophia dropped into her chair, her eyes glazed with horror.
Ethan jumped up, knocking his leather chair backward onto the hardwood floor with a deafening crash. "No! That’s a lie! I didn't know! Sophia gave me those files! She told me they were blind trust filings! I was just her attorney!"
"Shut up, Ethan!" Sophia screamed, turning on him like a feral cat. "Shut your pathetic mouth!"
"You used me!" Ethan shrieked, completely losing his mind in front of the entire international assembly. "You told me if I kept Claire quiet and handled the paper trail, you’d make me a senior partner! You set me up!"

"Security," Dr. Lindqvist said coldly into his microphone. "Escort the Vance delegation from the premises. The Swedish Economic Crime Authority has already arrived in the lobby."
