Chapter 4 - The Blind Men and the Queen

Ethan stared at me as if he were seeing a ghost.

Gone was the oversized cashmere sweater, the flat shoes, and the tired, hesitant posture of the woman he had ordered around in our Connecticut home. I stood before him clad in a bespoke charcoal Alexander McQueen power suit, a double-strand Tahitian pearl necklace resting against my collarbone, my dark hair swept back in an immaculate, severe updo. Flanking me were two six-foot-four private security officers in charcoal earpieces, their hands folded neatly in front of their belts.

For three seconds, the corridor went completely silent.

Then Sophia let out a high-pitched, theatrical laugh.

"Well, well, Ethan," Sophia sneered, stepping forward in her emerald-green couture dress, holding her diamond-encrusted clutch like a shield. "Look what crawled out of the gutter. Did you rent that suit, Claire? Or did you find a new sugar daddy on the flight over?"

Ethan recovered his composure, his jaw tightening into that familiar, venomous expression he always used right before he belittled me.

"Claire," Ethan barked, taking an aggressive step toward me. "What the hell do you think you're doing here? This is a closed-door international summit for accredited delegates only. Do you realize how much trouble you’re in? I called the embassy! Security!"

He spun toward the security guards stationed near the double mahogany doors of the plenary hall.

"Guards! Remove this woman immediately! She’s an estranged spouse stalking me, and she has no clearance to be in this wing!"

Neither guard moved an inch. Their eyes remained fixed forward, completely ignoring Ethan’s commands.

Ethan’s face flushed red. "Are you deaf? I am Ethan Walker, lead counsel for Vance Holdings! This woman is a trespasser!"

"I wouldn't strain your vocal cords, Mr. Walker," a calm, resonant voice sounded from behind me.

Dr. Henrik Lindqvist, the Chief Executive Officer of NordTech, walked out of the executive suite, accompanied by three senior Swedish board members.

Sophia’s face instantly brightened into her polished corporate smile. She smoothed her gown and stepped past Ethan, extending a manicured hand. "Dr. Lindqvist! Wonderful to see you again. We were just clearing out an unfortunate domestic disturbance. Let’s head inside so my team can present the Vance Holdings final acquisition tender. We’ve increased our cash component by eight percent."

Dr. Lindqvist didn't look at her hand. He didn't even look at Sophia.

Instead, the venerable Swedish executive walked straight toward me, bowed slightly from the waist, and extended both hands in profound respect.

"Director Quinn," Lindqvist said in flawless English. "It is an immense honor. Your mother sent word that you would be taking the lead today. We haven't seen you in Stockholm since the Baltic Fiber negotiations four years ago."

Sophia’s outstretched hand froze mid-air.

Ethan blinked stupidly, his mouth hanging slightly open. "Director... Quinn? Dr. Lindqvist, you have the wrong person. Her name is Claire Walker. She’s an unemployed housewife from Connecticut. She doesn't even know what an acquisition is!"

Dr. Lindqvist turned his head slowly, regarding Ethan with cold Nordic disdain. "Mr. Walker, I do not know what delusions you suffer from, but you are speaking to Claire Quinn. Sole Managing Director of Quinn European Holdings, Vice-Chairwoman of the Quinn Global Supervisory Board, and the direct controller of thirty-four percent of the transatlantic freight corridor."

Lindqvist turned back to me, gesturing toward the open double doors of the boardroom. "The entire assembly is seated, Claire. Whenever you are ready."

I looked directly into Ethan’s eyes.

Every ounce of color had drained from his face. His skin had turned the shade of damp chalk. His hands began to tremble so violently that he nearly dropped his leather briefcase.

"You..." Ethan choked out, his voice cracking like dry wood. "Quinn Global? The... the Quinn family?"

"You always told me I should learn more about the corporate world, Ethan," I said softly, my voice dripping with ice. "I decided to take your advice."

May you like

I brushed past him, leaving him standing in the corridor like a shattered statue.
