Chapter 10 - Blood Debts and Old Wolves

The blast vault was forty feet beneath the granite crust of the mountain, sealed behind eighteen inches of hardened steel and concrete. Inside, the sterile, warm light of the emergency surgical theater hummed softly, completely detached from the muffled thuds of explosions reverberating through the rock above.

Clara lay on the operating table, her breathing shallow, her nails biting into the padded vinyl. The stress and shock of the attack had triggered an immediate physiological reaction: sharp, agonizing contractions rippled across her abdomen every two minutes.

"Dr. Keller!" she gasped, cold sweat matting her hair against her forehead. "Something's wrong... the baby... it's coming!"

Dr. Keller’s face was grim as he peeled back the sterile drape. "The placental separation has reopened. Don Rossi ordered us to wait three more weeks, but we don't have three minutes. The baby's oxygen levels are dipping! Nurse, prep the epidural! We are performing an emergency C-section right now!"

Above them, the ceiling shook violently. Dust drifted down from the ventilation shafts.

On the ground floor of the Pilatus estate, the battle was nothing short of an abattoir.

Marcus Rossi moved through the smoky corridors like a vengeance spirit. Every room he entered became a tomb for the Cobra operatives. A mercenary burst through the dining hall doors with an assault rifle; Marcus sidestepped the spray, caught the man by the throat, and snapped his neck against the marble mantlepiece before snatching the dropped rifle and clearing the hallway with three double-taps.

"Don Rossi! We are flanked on the north terrace!" Leon’s voice crackled through the comms amidst heavy gunfire. "They brought heavy anti-materiel rifles! They're cutting through the vault's outer ventilation seals!"

Marcus shoved a fresh 30-round magazine into the captured rifle. Blood soaked his left sleeve from the sniper graze, but his eyes burned with an unholy, ancient fire.

"They didn't come to kill me, Leon," Marcus rasped over the radio, stepping over three motionless bodies in the corridor. "Vanev wants the child. He thinks if he steals my granddaughter, he can hold the entire global trade network hostage."

Marcus kicked open the shattered patio doors and stepped out into the blizzard.

The sub-zero wind whipped against his bare face, but the heat radiating from the burning outbuildings melted the snow beneath his combat boots. Across the courtyard, emerging from the tree line, walked a tall, lean figure in a heavy wolf-fur coat, flanked by four elite bodyguards armed with heavy automatic weapons.

Victor Vanev—The Patriarch.

The man who had spent twenty years in the shadows of the Russian underworld, brooding over his defeat in Palermo, had finally come to collect his debt.

"Marcus!" Vanev called out, his deep, raspy voice carrying over the howl of the mountain wind. "You look old, my friend! The grease monkey life softened you! You left your empire in Sicily to fix carburetors in Michigan, and for what? A broken girl who couldn't even keep her husband loyal!"

Marcus didn't slow his stride. He walked straight toward the four rifles aimed at his chest, his pace deliberate, unshakable, terrifying.

"Silas Vance gave me the override keys for ten thousand dollars and a handshake," Vanev laughed mockingly. "He died in the gutter, crying like a dog. And now, your bloodline ends in this snow."

Marcus stopped ten paces away. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his face, revealing teeth stained red from a split lip.

"You always were a fool, Victor," Marcus said softly. "You think Silas Vance had the override keys?"

Vanev’s smile faltered slightly. "What do you mean?"

Marcus tapped the small silver wristwatch on his cuff. "Silas wrote the software. But Clara wrote the encryption kernels. The moment your tech accessed that bypass code, your entire satellite network in Moscow, your shell accounts in Cyprus, and the biometric tracking on your extraction choppers were diverted straight into the command grid of the Italian Special Operations Command."

Above the roar of the wind, a deep, rhythmic thrumming began to rattle the very foundation of the mountain.

From beyond the ridge, four matte-black Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopters surged upward like predatory wasps, their nose-mounted 30mm chain guns pivoting down and locking their laser guidance beams directly onto Vanev’s chest.

Vanev’s eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror. "Impossible..."

"My daughter isn't just my heir, Victor," Marcus whispered, stepping forward until the barrel of his rifle rested squarely against Vanev’s forehead. "She is my strategist."
