Chapter 3 - The Ghost Fleet

Silas stared at his phone, his thumb swiping wildly over the unresponsive black glass. The device was burning hot, running a terminal override that melted the internal processor within seconds. A faint wisp of bitter white smoke curled from the charging port, and he dropped the phone onto the linoleum with a curse.
"Bradley, get her moved right now!" Silas snarled, his voice cracking with the first real tremor of panic. "Don't just stand there! Get security up here! Call the SWAT division!"
"The elevators aren't responding, Mr. Vance," Dr. Bradley stammered, backing toward the shattered glass doorway. He pulled his own pager from his belt; the tiny LCD display was scrolling a single repeating phrase: *TRAITOR TO THE BLOOD.* "None of the exterior doors are opening. The entire hospital network... it’s locked down from an external IP."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the corridor groaned. The reinforced steel buckled outward, as if struck by a hydraulic ram.
Two men stepped through the breach.
They didn't look like police. They didn't wear hospital badges. They wore tailored black tactical wool overcoats over dark tactical vests, completely unmarked. Neither man carried a drawn firearm, yet their posture—silent, balanced, radiating lethal precision—emptied the hallway in an instant.
Silas puffed out his chest, stepping forward with the desperate arrogance of a man accustomed to buying his way out of every corner. "Do you have any idea who I am? I pay the salary of the chief of police! I own the private security contractor that patrols this sector! Identify yourselves immediately!"
The taller of the two men, an operative with a silver scar running along his jawline and cold Scandinavian eyes, didn't break stride. He closed the ten-foot distance between them in two fluid strides.
Silas reached inside his jacket, perhaps reaching for an executive panic button.
The scarred operative seized Silas’s wrist. There was a sickening *pop*, followed by Silas screaming as his arm was twisted behind his back and driven downward until his cheek slammed flat against the cold linoleum floor. The man pinned him down with a single knee pressed precisely against the base of his spine.
"Silas Vance," the man said in a soft, clipped accent. "Your net worth as of twelve minutes ago was one point two billion dollars. As of forty seconds ago, the Osei Sovereign Trust liquidated your holding accounts across Zurich, Singapore, and Grand Cayman. You are currently indebted twelve million dollars to creditors who collect in severed fingers."
"Get off me!" Silas wheezed, his face turning purple against the floor. "My wife! I have legal medical guardianship! Aria is mentally incompetent!"
The second man stepped past Silas entirely, ignoring his squirming form as if he were a cockroach on the pavement. He approached Nurse Priya, who was trembling beside my gurney, clutching the IV bag to her chest like a weapon.
The operative bowed his head slightly, his tone shifting into absolute, deferential courtesy. "Nurse Priya Patel?"
"Y-yes?" she squeaked.
"Mr. Marcus Osei sends his deepest gratitude for your vigilance," the operative said, handing her a titanium satellite phone and a sterile black medical case. "Inside this case is synthetic surfactant, high-grade coagulants, and universal negative whole blood from the Osei private stores. Our chief medical officer is descending by chopper to the roof pad now. You are in command of this patient’s triage. Whatever you need, you have. Anyone who interferes will be removed from the gene pool."
Priya looked at the sleek medical case, then at me. Her fear seemed to vanish under the sheer weight of professional duty. She popped the latches. "I need an ultrasound machine that actually works, three units of sterile saline, and the surgical suite cleared immediately!"
"Done," the operative said. He touched his earpiece. "Clear OR Three. Bring the surgical team down from the roof. The Princess is coming in."
*Princess?*
My mind spun as pain ripped through my lower abdomen again. I reached out, my fingers brushing the operative's sleeve. "My dad..." I choked out, tears burning my cheeks. "Where is... Marcus?"
The operative looked down at me, and for the first time, his granite face softened into genuine warmth. "He landed at JFK twenty minutes ago, Miss Aria. The NYPD attempted to establish a motorcade perimeter to question him. The NYPD no longer exists on the West Side Highway."
On the floor beneath his partner's boot, Silas gasped for air, his eyes rolling back in terror. "Osei? Marcus Osei is an old grease monkey! He fixes transmissions in Newark! He’s nobody!"

The operative holding Silas looked down with mild pity.
"Marcus Osei stepped down from the High Table twenty-five years ago so his daughter could grow up believing the world was a gentle place," the operative whispered. "You broke his peace, Mr. Vance. And when an Emperor comes out of retirement, he does not bring paperwork. He brings extinction."
