Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Alexander Carter

The evening breeze carried a sudden, suffocating chill across the grand courtyard of the Whitmore estate. The thirty elite guests who had just been chuckling at my humiliation froze in place, their champagne flutes suspended in midair. Nobody dared to breathe.
Daniel remained on his knees, his tailored slacks sinking into the damp gravel. His hands shook violently against his thighs. For three years, Daniel had obsessed over Alexander Carter. He kept framed magazine profiles of my father in his study, studied his investment strategies like scripture, and spent millions trying to secure even a five-minute pitch with Carter Global Holdings.
Now, the titan had arrived. But he hadn't come for a business meeting.
Six towering men in charcoal suits stepped out of the flanking SUVs, establishing an impenetrable perimeter. Then, my father moved.
He didn't spare Daniel a single glance. He walked with heavy, deliberate strides directly toward me. His signature silver-tipped cane struck the pavement with the steady, ominous rhythm of a ticking countdown. Behind his steel-rimmed glasses, his eyes were cold as liquid nitrogen—until his gaze found mine.
"Emily," he said, his voice dropping into a tender rasp that broke through the terrifying quiet.
"Daddy," I choked out, the adrenaline draining from my limbs all at once.
Before I could collapse, my father caught me. His arms wrapped around me with an unyielding strength I hadn’t felt in six long years. When his leather-gloved hand gently brushed against my scraped elbow and the torn silk of my dress, he flinched as if the wound were his own.
"Look at me, sweetheart," he commanded softly, lifting my chin. He saw the red handprint blooming along the curve of my jaw, the dust clinging to my hair from being dragged across the marble floor, and the blood trickling down my shins.
A deadly stillness settled over his face.
Behind us, Daniel finally found his voice, though it sounded like a dying gasp. "M-Mr. Carter... Sir. This is... there’s been a terrible misunderstanding. I had no idea—"
My father didn’t turn around. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out an immaculate linen handkerchief, and began dabbing the blood from my knee.
"Julian," my father said quietly, addressing the head of his private security detail.
"Yes, Mr. Carter?"

"Tell me what the penalties are for aggravated assault and battery under state penal code."
Daniel swallowed hard, his face draining of whatever color was left. Margaret, who had just stepped onto the terrace with a scowl, suddenly realized whose name had been spoken. The glass slipped from her manicured fingers, shattering loudly against the stone.
