Chapter 9 - Unraveling the Web

With Mark secured and hauled away in the back of a police cruiser, the true scope of his depravity began to surface.
Two hours later, forensic investigators and financial detectives arrived at the hospital to take my formal statement. While Hailey rested peacefully under 24-hour police guard, Detective Reyes laid out the findings from the emergency raid on our suburban home.
"It’s worse than we thought, Mrs. Carter," Reyes said, closing the door of the private conference room. "In the basement, behind the false drywall near the furnace, our team found a clandestine workshop. He had laboratory-grade equipment, mercury compounds, and vials of slow-acting neurotoxins."
"Where did he get that?" I asked, trembling with revulsion. "Mark is an accountant for a logistics firm!"
"That logistics firm handles international freight for pharmaceutical research companies," Reyes explained grimly. "He had been skimming compromised testing materials from disposal shipments for over eight months. He fabricated the capsule casing using a 3D resin printer and an electroplating kit."
"And the debts?" I asked.
"Severe gambling addictions. Unregulated online sports betting and private offshore accounts. He was down over eight hundred thousand dollars to some very dangerous individuals. His plan was to collect Hailey’s three-million-dollar life insurance payout, pay off the debts, stage a grief-stricken move abroad, and leave you with nothing."
Tears of anger and betrayal burned my eyes. "He was going to kill our child for money. How could someone look at their own flesh and blood and see a paycheck?"
"Because sociopaths don't see people, Mrs. Carter. They only see assets and liabilities," Detective Reyes said softly. "The good news is, the evidence against him is overwhelming. Attempted first-degree premeditated murder, child abuse resulting in severe bodily harm, manufacturing of illegal chemical weapons, and insurance fraud. He will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars. He will never touch you or Hailey again."

For the first time in months, the crushing weight on my chest lifted slightly. The nightmare was over. Mark was in a cage, Hailey was healing, and we were going to survive.
Or so I desperately wanted to believe.
