Chapter 7 - The Intruder

"Detective!" Officer Miller hurried down the corridor, his hand resting on his service weapon. "Security cameras at the main entrance just flagged Mark Carter’s vehicle. He didn't go to urgent care. He called the ambulance dispatch records and tracked Hailey’s admission to St. Helena."

My heart leaped into my throat. "He's here?"

"Mrs. Carter, I need you to step back into the recovery suite with Hailey," Detective Reyes said calmly, her voice snapping into authoritative command. "Miller, call for immediate backup. Lock down the pediatric recovery ward."

"Wait!" I cried. "You can't let him near her!"

"He won't lay a finger on her, I promise," Reyes said, drawing her weapon and keeping it low by her thigh. "Now get behind those secure doors."

I ran through the double doors into the pediatric recovery unit. Hailey was lying in bed, still groggy from the anesthesia, a nasal cannula supplying her with oxygen. When she saw me, her eyelids fluttered open.

"Mom..." she slurred softly.

"I’m right here, baby. You're safe," I whispered, holding her hand tightly, positioning my body between her bed and the reinforced door.

Through the wired glass window of the ward doors, I could see the main reception corridor. Moments later, the sliding glass doors opened, and Mark stepped into the hall.

He didn't look like a loving, anxious father. His coat was buttoned tight, his hands buried deep in his pockets, his gaze darting methodically from room to room. When he approached the nurse's station, he flashed that familiar, charming smile—the one he used to disarm everyone around him.

"Excuse me," Mark said smoothly to the head nurse. "I’m Mark Carter. My daughter Hailey was brought in by mistake. I need to see her immediately."

"Sir, this ward is restricted," the nurse replied, glancing nervously at the panic button beneath her desk.

Mark’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes turned into cold slits of ice. "I am her father. I have legal guardianship. You show me where my daughter is, or I will tear this place apart."
