Chapter 6 - Secrets in the Shadows

Three days passed in an eerie, suspended reality. Outside the Lake Forest estate, the financial war between Elias Kwon and the Moretti empire escalated into open warfare. Elias retaliated by shorting Moretti supply chain stocks and petitioning a federal judge for an emergency injunction against the liquidation of the Meridian assets.

Inside the estate, my body was undergoing its own quiet revolution.

The morning sickness had evolved into an unrelenting ache. Every morning at dawn, I knelt by the marble bathtub, retching until my stomach was empty, terrified that Mrs. Gable or Julian would hear. I was barely keeping down toast and broth.

On the fourth morning, I sat at the mahogany vanity, smoothing out the wrinkled sonogram printout. The tiny black-and-white grain showed a tiny smudge with a flickering, defiant heartbeat. Eight weeks. Conceived during our anniversary trip to Aspen—the last time Elias had looked at me with tenderness, before the Meridian deal swallowed him whole.

"A girl or a boy?"

I gasped, slamming the drawer shut, my heart leaping into my throat.

Julian was standing in the doorway. He was dressed in a sharp navy suit, but his tie was slightly askew. His eyes were fixed on the closed drawer, his face unreadable.

"Julian," I breathed, trying to steady my racing pulse. "You shouldn't walk in without knocking."

"I knocked twice," he said softly, walking into the room. He didn't stop until he was standing three feet from me. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small amber bottle, placing it gently on the vanity.

It was prenatal vitamins.

"Mrs. Gable found your empty travel bottle in the trash yesterday," Julian said, his gaze dropping to my stomach, then back to my eyes. "She came to me out of concern because you’ve barely eaten two hundred calories a day."

I felt the blood drain from my face. The room suddenly seemed very small, the air impossibly thin. "Julian, please. Elias cannot know. If he finds out, he will use every legal weapon, every corrupt judge in Cook County to take this baby from me. He will lock me in that penthouse and treat this child like another asset for Kwon Enterprises."

Julian’s eyes darkened, a muscle ticking in his jaw. "You think I would tell him?"

"You're using me to destroy him," I said, my voice shaking with raw vulnerability. "A baby is the ultimate leverage. If Elias knows I'm carrying his heir, he’ll surrender anything you want."

Julian stepped closer, his shadow falling over me. For a second, I expected the calculating ruthlessness he was infamous for. Instead, he dropped down to one knee so his eyes were level with mine. The intensity in his gaze was terrifying, but it wasn't cruel.

"Listen to me, Clara," he said, each word deliberate and firm. "I hate your husband because he is a hollow man who destroys everything he touches. But I am not a monster. I will not use an unborn child as a bargaining chip in a corporate feud. You came to me for protection. As long as you are under my roof, you and that child are safe from him. From everyone."

Tears blurred my vision. The sheer relief of hearing those words snapped the brittle armor I had worn for days. I covered my face with my hands, my shoulders shaking as silent, heavy sobs wracked my body.

Julian didn't touch me inappropriately. He simply placed a steady, reassuring hand on my shoulder, anchoring me against the storm.

"Tonight is the Winter Benefactors Gala at the Drake Hotel," Julian murmured after a long moment. "Elias will be there. The entire city expects him to announce that he has recovered the Meridian deal."

I looked up through wet eyelashes, wiping my cheeks. "He hasn't. The contracts are locked in your private vault."

"I know," Julian said, his eyes flashing with dark anticipation. "Which is why we are going to attend."

I stared at him in disbelief. "Are you insane? He will have security drag me out!"

May you like

"He won't dare cause a scene in front of the Governor and the press," Julian replied, standing up to his full height. "It’s time to stop hiding, Clara. If you want Elias to sign those divorce papers, you have to show him that you aren't hiding under a rock. You have to show him that you are standing in the light—and that you aren't afraid of him anymore."
