Chapter 11 - The Unfinished Audit

Three weeks later, the snow began to thaw along the banks of Lake Michigan.
The corporate world had been reshuffled. Marcus Vance was in federal custody awaiting trial for corporate espionage and attempted murder. The Meridian portfolio had been restructured into a charitable housing trust managed entirely under my name, with Julian Moretti and Elias Kwon signing a historic ten-year non-aggression pact as co-trustees.
I stood on the balcony of a quiet lakehouse in Door County, Wisconsin—far from the suffocating high-rises of Chicago. The air smelled of pine needles and damp earth, spring quietly whispering beneath the winter frost.
A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. Elias pulled me against his chest, tucking his chin over my shoulder. He wore a simple gray cashmere sweater, his wedding band back on his left ring finger—though mine was still kept in my jewelry box, waiting for the day I truly felt ready to put it back on.
"The doctor called from Madison," Elias murmured against my ear, his hand softly resting over the slight, visible curve of my belly. "The twelve-week scan is confirmed for Thursday. Are we finding out the gender?"
"Not yet," I smiled, leaning back against his warmth. "Let's keep one secret for ourselves."
Elias turned me in his arms, his dark eyes filled with a tenderness that had finally replaced the cold ambition. He touched my cheek, his thumb brushing over my lower lip. "Thank you for not giving up on me, Clara. Even when I gave you every reason to walk away forever."
"Don't thank me yet, Elias," I said, looking into his eyes. "You're still on probation."
He chuckled softly, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss against my lips. It was sweet, patient, and full of the promises we were rebuilding day by day.
Just then, my satellite phone inside the living room began to chime with a sharp, urgent tone.
Elias frowned slightly, pulling back. "Who has that number? Only Julian and our security team."
I walked inside the glass-walled living room and picked up the device. A secure video file had been delivered with an encrypted subject line: *Meridian Origin Files — Classified.*
I tapped the screen.
A high-definition security recording began to play. The timestamp showed two years ago, inside the private office of Elias’s late grandfather.
On the screen, Grandfather Kwon sat across from Julian Moretti’s father, signing the original foundation charter for the trust that had funded my sixty-million-dollar escape.
Julian’s father's voice crackled through the speaker:
*“When the time comes, Arthur, if your grandson fails the test, my son will claim what was promised to him thirty years ago. The girl, the company, and the bloodline.”*
Grandfather Kwon looked at the camera, his weathered face dead serious as he signed his name.
*“If Elias cannot cherish her, she belongs to Moretti. That is the debt we owe.”*
The screen went black.
A single text message flashed beneath the video from Julian’s private number:
*“He thinks he won you back, Clara. Ask him about the secondary clause on your grandfather’s will. Ask him what he really traded to get you out of my house.”*
I lowered the phone, my heart suddenly freezing in my chest.

Behind me, Elias was smiling as he poured two cups of tea, completely unaware that the war had never been about contracts, money, or pride.
It was about me. And the battle had only just begun.
