Chapter 6 - Unmasking at the Gala

The grand ballroom dissolved into utter bedlam.
Whispers exploded into open mockery. Women in ten-thousand-dollar designer gowns covered their mouths, giggling behind feathered fans and programs. Julianna, the supreme court justice’s wife who had been patronized by Margaret only thirty minutes earlier, leaned toward the mayor’s wife with a wicked grin.
"Did you hear that?" Julianna hissed loudly enough for three rows of guests to hear. "She threw the real owner out this afternoon! She was living on Claire’s money the entire time!"
"I always wondered how Ethan survived the Miami real estate collapse," another voice chimed in. "His father left them broke. Claire bought their name back!"
Margaret’s face morphed from crimson fury to a sickening, ash-grey terror. She lunged down the stairs, grabbing Ethan by his tuxedo lapels and shaking him with frantic strength.
"Ethan! Tell them!" she screamed, her spit landing on his cheek. "Tell these liars that this is our home! Tell them your grandfather built this house!"
"Mother..." Ethan choked out, his eyes wide and glossy with tears of absolute humiliation. "The house... the house was leveraged to the maximum in 2020. Claire... Claire paid off the ninety-million-dollar mortgage from her grandfather's trust."
"What?!" Margaret shrieked, her voice reaching a pitch that rattled the crystal flutes. "You gave Crestview to her?!"
"I didn't have a choice!" Ethan sobbed, completely breaking down in front of the entire upper crust of New York high society. "I was going to prison, Mother! The SEC was auditing the offshore funds! She agreed to save me if I put the estate into a blind fidelity trust!"
Vanessa recoiled from Ethan as if he were covered in venomous snakes. She stepped back, her manicured hands fluttering in front of her face.
"You lied to me," Vanessa gasped, her voice raw with sudden realization. "You told me you were worth eighty million dollars! You told me you owned Whitmore Logistics!"
"I do run it!" Ethan pleaded, reaching for her. "Vanessa, please, the baby—"
"The baby?" Vanessa spat, her aristocratic facade crumbling into cheap, vicious fury. "I am twenty-eight years old! You think I gave up my career in marketing to raise a baby in a rented condo with a penniless bankrupt? You told me I was going to be the mistress of Crestview!"
"And you won't even be a tenant," a smooth, steady voice announced from the main entrance.
Every eye in the grand ballroom snapped toward the entrance hall.
The crowd gasped. Several society photographers dropped their cameras in sheer astonishment.
I stood framed beneath the archway.
I was no longer wearing the muted beige cashmere sweater or simple flats Margaret had insisted I wear to keep from "embarrassing the family aesthetic."
I wore a bespoke, midnight-blue silk velvet evening gown that swept against the marble floor. Around my neck was the Henderson Star—a seventy-carat sapphire necklace that had once belonged to my grandmother, worth more than every single piece of jewelry Margaret had ever worn in her entire life combined.
Behind me stood Arthur Vance and four armed private security contractors in dark suits.
"Claire..." Ethan breathed, looking at me as if I were a ghost risen from a tomb.
I smiled, stepping forward with slow, deliberate grace. The crowd parted instantly, bowing slightly out of sheer instinct as the true owner of the empire walked the center aisle of her own palace.

"Good evening, Margaret," I said softly, my voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "I believe you told me to enjoy every minute. I must admit... I truly am."
