Chapter 5 - The Process Servers

Before Ethan could process Donald's words, the heavy double doors at the front of the mansion slammed open with the force of a thunderclap.
The music faltered. The violins slid into a discordant shriek and stopped altogether.
Four uniformed deputies from the Westchester County Sheriff’s Department entered the foyer, their heavy boots thudding against the polished parquet flooring. Behind them walked two men in charcoal grey suits, each carrying thick leather briefcases and legal envelopes stamped with bright red municipal wax seals.
The crowd of one hundred and fifty socialites parted like the Red Sea, gasping in collective shock.
Margaret was the first to recover her fury. She marched down the grand staircase, her posture rigid, her chin lifted high like Marie Antoinette confronting the Parisian mob.
"What is the meaning of this insolence?" Margaret shrieked, her voice reverberating off the thirty-foot ceiling. "This is private property! Crestview Estate has stood for nearly a century without the common police desecrating its halls! Who authorized this outrage?"
The lead deputy, a weathered sergeant with thirty years on the force, did not blink. He pulled a folded legal parchment from his belt.
"Mrs. Margaret Whitmore?" the deputy asked flatly.
"I am Mrs. Whitmore!" Margaret snarled. "And you will be out of a job by sunrise when I call the district attorney!"
"I don't think so, ma'am," the sergeant replied calmly. "I am executing an immediate Emergency Writ of Trespass and Vacatur issued by Judge Harold Davies of the Westchester County Supreme Court at four-thirty this afternoon."
A collective gasp rippled through the room. Vanessa Hale clutched Ethan’s arm, her face draining of color until she looked nearly as white as her silk dress.
"Ethan..." Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling. "What is he saying? What does writ of trespass mean?"
Ethan stood frozen, the phone still clutched in his trembling hand, staring at the front doors as the two men in charcoal suits stepped forward.
"Good evening, Mr. Whitmore," the taller of the two lawyers said. "I am Richard Cole, junior partner at Vance & Associates, representing Mrs. Claire Henderson-Whitmore."
"Henderson?" Margaret barked, her voice cracking into hysteria. "Claire? That little charity-case mouse? What does that ungrateful peasant have to do with this?"
Richard Cole unzipped his briefcase and produced a thick stack of certified documents, holding them up so that every society reporter, every senator, and every hedge fund manager could clearly see the blue judicial stamps.
"This property," Cole announced in a clear, resonant baritone that carried to the farthest corner of the ballroom, "was acquired in full by the Claire Henderson Living Trust on October 14th, 2021. The purchase was executed using private funds derived entirely from the estate of the late Thomas Henderson."
He turned to face the stunned crowd of guests.
"Furthermore, pursuant to the legally binding postnuptial agreement signed by Ethan Whitmore on January 12th, 2022, any act of marital infidelity, cohabitation, or unauthorized diversion of trust assets automatically terminates all rights of residency, occupancy, and financial stewardship granted to Ethan Whitmore and his immediate relations."
Cole turned his gaze directly onto Margaret.

"Mrs. Whitmore. Mr. Whitmore. You are currently trespassing upon private real estate owned exclusively by my client. This party is unauthorized. The caterers have been notified of commercial fraud. And you have precisely forty-five minutes to vacate the premises before you are removed in handcuffs."
