Chapter 10 - Shattered Porcelain

The heavy pitcher cracked across Daniel’s nose with a sickening crunch.
Water, ice cubes, and shattered ceramic exploded across the room. Daniel staggered backward with a howl of rage and shock, clutching his face as blood poured through his gloved fingers.
Rachel didn't hesitate. She threw off the sheets, ripping the IV catheter straight out of the back of her hand. Blood spurted from the vein, spattering the white hospital linoleum, but the adrenaline surging through her veins completely drowned out the agony in her face and arm.
She lunged toward the door, her bare feet slipping on the wet floor.
Daniel lunged after her, grabbing her by the hair and slamming her backward against the footboard of the bed. “You crazy bitch!” he hissed, spitting blood onto her hospital gown. “You think you’re walking out of here?”
Rachel kicked violently with her bare heels, striking his kneecap. Daniel grunted, his grip slipping just enough for Rachel to twist her body and reach the wall-mounted emergency crash button beside the headboard.
She slammed her fist down on the red plastic switch.
An ear-piercing siren immediately blared through the room, accompanied by a flashing blue strobe light above the door. A recorded automated voice echoed across the ceiling speakers: *Code Blue, Room 412. Security dispatch immediately.*
Daniel’s eyes dilated with sheer panic. He wiped the blood from his eyes, looked at the locked door, and then looked down at Rachel, who was backing into the corner, wielding a jagged shard of the broken porcelain pitcher like a dagger.
“Stay back!” she screamed, her voice tearing through the sound of the alarm. “Touch me and I’ll take your throat out!”
Footsteps pounded outside the room. Heavy shoulders slammed against the locked wooden door from the hallway.
“Hospital Security! Open the door!” a voice shouted from the outside.
Daniel cursed, dropped the empty syringe onto the blood-soaked floor, and turned toward the window. The fourth-floor room looked out onto a concrete maintenance roof three stories down. There was no escape that way.
The wooden door shuddered under a massive impact.
*BAM!*
The lock gave way with a splintering crash.
The door flew inward, and Detective Laura Kim burst into the room, service weapon drawn and leveled in a two-handed combat grip, followed by two armed transit police officers.
“Police! Drop to your knees! Put your hands on your head right now!” Kim roared, her voice cutting through the siren like thunder.
Daniel froze. His bloody hands slowly rose into the air, the latex gloves gleaming slick and crimson under the flashing emergency lights.
“Down on your face! Now!” the officers screamed, tackling him to the floor before he could speak another word, pinning his arms behind his back and ratcheting steel handcuffs around his wrists until the metal clicked against bone.
Rachel sank against the wall, dropping the porcelain shard. She sat in the puddle of water and blood, trembling so violently she couldn't support her own weight.

Detective Kim holstered her weapon, rushed to Rachel’s side, and wrapped a warm blanket around her shaking shoulders.
“You’re safe, Rachel,” Kim said, pressing a clean gauze pad against Rachel’s bleeding hand. “We’ve got him. We picked up Marcus Vance ten minutes ago outside the parking garage. He gave up everything.”
