Chapter 8 - The Trap Tightens

Rachel didn't scream. She didn't cry out. A chilling, primitive survival instinct took over, locking her muscles in place while her mind raced at lightning speed.
She looked at the hospital door. The heavy wooden panel was cracked open an inch, revealing the bright hallway where nurses in scrubs occasionally walked past. Downstairs was the cafeteria. Daniel would be back in less than four minutes.
Moving with agonized slowness, Rachel reached out her trembling right hand and tapped the trackpad of Daniel’s laptop. The screen flared to full brightness.
The desktop was organized with military precision. In the center of the screen was a folder labeled *Grandview Development*.
She clicked it open.
Inside were dozen of scanned documents: her own credit reports, copies of her driver's license, forged medical proxy forms, and a life insurance application submitted two months ago through an offshore underwriter. The policy value was staggering: five million dollars, payable upon accidental death, with Daniel Brooks named as the sole irrevocable beneficiary.
Attached to the policy was an audio recording labeled *Call_Evan_Debts.mp3*.
With shaking fingers, Rachel plugged Daniel’s earphones into the jack and pressed play.
A rough, gravelly voice spoke first: *“Bennett owes two hundred grand. His sister won't sell the plaza to bail him out.”*
Then Daniel’s voice answered, calm, cultured, and devoid of all emotion: *“I know. She’s stubborn. But Evan’s desperation is an asset. Tell Evan you’ll wipe his debt clean if he just buys an undecorated cake and leaves his workshop door open on Saturday morning. Tell him we’re just staging an IRS audit scare to force her hand.”*
*“And what are we actually doing?”* the rough voice asked.
*“I’ll slip the metal and glass into the filling myself while Evan is out buying party supplies,”* Daniel replied casually, as if discussing an oil change. *“Evan has upholstery staples all over his bench. His prints are all over the tools. When she chokes or bleeds out at the table, the police will look straight at the brother who needed her money. Evan goes to state prison for murder, I inherit the estate as her surviving fiancé, and you get your two hundred grand plus a twenty-percent cut of the plaza sale.”*
*“What if the cut doesn't kill her?”*
*“Then she ends up in a quiet hospital bed,”* Daniel’s voice purred through the earbuds. *“Where I have power of attorney. And an air bubble in an IV line is remarkably hard to trace.”*
Rachel ripped the earphones out, her lungs starving for oxygen.
She turned toward the call button pinned to her pillow. She reached for it—
The door clicked open.
Daniel walked into the room, holding a paper coffee cup in one hand and a bottle of spring water in the other.

His eyes dropped from Rachel’s pale, sweat-slicked face down to the open laptop screen glowing beneath her fingertips.
The gentle, loving smile on his face vanished completely, replaced by an empty, dead-eyed stare that made the room feel twenty degrees colder.
