Chapter 10 - A Family Reborn

Two weeks later, the spring sun broke through the gray winter clouds over Long Island, melting the last stubborn patches of snow on the estate grounds.

The DeLuca mansion, once an oppressive mausoleum of grief, was alive with light and sound. The black funeral drapes had been taken down. The windows were thrown open, letting in the crisp, salt-scented breeze from the Atlantic Sound.

In the sprawling sunroom overlooking the gardens, Clara sat at an ornate patio table, watching Emma chase a golden retriever puppy across the manicured lawn. Clara was no longer wearing a maid’s uniform. She was dressed in a soft silk dress, a legal document sitting in front of her granting her a permanent deed to an estate in upstate New York and an educational trust fund that would guarantee Emma’s future for three generations.

"She loves the puppy," Lorenzo said, stepping onto the terrace.

He was wearing a casual linen shirt, sleeves rolled up. Resting against his shoulder, fast asleep with a thumb tucked into her mouth, was Giulia. The baby was thriving, gaining weight, her cheeks pink and healthy.

Clara stood up respectfully, but Lorenzo waved her down. "Sit, Clara. In this house, you will never stand on ceremony again. You saved my daughter’s life. You saved mine."

Clara smiled through misty eyes. "She looks more like Elena every day, Don Lorenzo. Especially when she smiles."

Lorenzo looked down at his sleeping daughter. A profound, unshakeable peace—something he had never felt in his entire violent life—settled deep into his chest. For the first time, the heavy weight behind his ribs was gone. He had reorganized the syndicate, cutting out the rot, setting up a legitimate foundation in Elena’s name, ensuring that Giulia would grow up in a world of safety, luxury, and unconditional love.

He walked back inside to the grand hall.

He stopped before the portrait of Elena. The candlelight in her painted eyes didn't look sad anymore; in the bright morning sunlight, she looked triumphant.

Lorenzo lifted Giulia gently, letting the baby’s tiny hand brush against the bottom of the gilded frame. "We’re home, Elena," he whispered softly. "Our little girl is safe. I will protect her with every breath I have."

Giulia giggled in her sleep, nuzzling deeper into the crook of Lorenzo’s neck. Lorenzo closed his eyes, smiling—a real, genuine smile that lit up his entire face for the first time in years.
