Chapter 11 - The Knock at Midnight

Six months later. Autumn in the Hamptons.

The DeLuca estate was quiet. It was 1:15 in the morning, and the rhythmic sound of ocean waves crashed against the cliffs below the bluff.

Lorenzo stood by the crib in the newly renovated master nursery, watching nine-month-old Giulia sleep. She had learned to crawl last week, and her first word had been "Dada"—a word that had brought the most feared man on the Eastern Seaboard to his knees in unadulterated joy.

He reached down, gently tucking the embroidered blanket around her tiny shoulders. Every security system was active: thermal perimeter sensors, twenty elite guards patrolling the grounds, encrypted radio frequencies. The DeLuca family was at peace. Rivals had fallen into line; business was flourishing; his home was a fortress of serenity.

Lorenzo turned off the nursery lamp, leaving only the soft glow of the moon, and walked down the long corridor toward his private study.

As he stepped inside the dark room, his personal encrypted burner phone—a device that had remained silent in his steel safe for over two years, known only to three people in the world—suddenly vibrated.

*Bzzzt. Bzzzt.*

Lorenzo froze.

The blood in his veins ran ice cold. That phone was tied to a private satellite line. Two of the people who had the number were dead. The third was his father, buried seven years ago.

He walked slowly to the desk, entered the biometric code on the hidden safe, and pulled out the matte-black device.

The screen flashed with an incoming call from an untraceable, scrambled international exchange.

Lorenzo raised the phone to his ear. He didn't speak. He waited, his jaw clenched, every muscle in his body coiled like a steel spring.

For five agonizing seconds, there was only static.

Then, a trembling, ragged breath sounded on the other end of the line.

A woman’s voice whispered through the receiver—a voice that Lorenzo would recognize if he were deaf, blind, and buried beneath six feet of earth.

"Lorenzo..."

Lorenzo’s heart stopped. The world tilted violently on its axis.

It was Elena’s voice.

"Lorenzo... you found our baby," she choked out through tears, her voice terrified and breathless, accompanied by the faint, muffled sound of industrial machinery and shouting men in the background. "Thank God... you found Giulia. But Lorenzo... Victor didn't act alone. They have me. They’ve had me in the dark for over a year... Lorenzo, please, they're coming for her—"

*BANG.*

A gunshot echoed through the receiver, followed by the sound of the phone clattering against concrete and the heavy thud of a body falling.

Then, a man’s cold, unfamiliar voice picked up the line.

"You should have checked the ashes, Don DeLuca," the voice sneered. "We're on your roof."

At that exact second, the heavy shatter of skylight glass exploded above the nursery down the hall, followed instantly by the piercing, terrified scream of Giulia in the dark.
