Chapter 8 - Behind Closed Doors

Around 3:00 PM, a violent pounding rattled my apartment door.

I checked the security peephole. It was my father. His tie was loose, his jacket rumpled, his hair unkempt. Behind him stood my mother, her face blotchy and swollen from frantic crying.

I unlocked the deadbolt but left the heavy security chain in place, cracking the door four inches.

"Erica! Open this damn door right now!" my father bellowed, his voice cracking with panic.

"You have thirty seconds to leave this hallway before I call building security," I said through the gap, my tone ice-cold.

"Erica, please, baby, listen to your mother!" My mom squeezed into the view, her eyes wild, clutching the doorframe. "You have to take the video down! You have to tell them it was edited! Arthur's main business partners pulled their accounts this morning! Our mortgage is due next week! They're protesting outside Kayla's office building!"

"Kayla pushed me into nine feet of water, Mom," I said, looking her directly in the eye. "I was drowning. And you took a sip of champagne."

"We didn't know you couldn't breathe!" my mother cried desperately, shifting into hysterical gaslighting. "We thought you were splashing! We thought it was a game! You're destroying our lives over an accident!"

"Stop lying," I said. "You knew. You've always known. You covered for her when she stole my identity at twenty-one. You watched her take loans in my name, and you told me to keep quiet."

My father’s face flushed purple. He shoved his shoulder against the door, rattling the heavy brass chain. "You ungrateful little brat! We raised you! We gave you everything! After all we've done, you drag our family name through the mud for internet clout?! If you don't delete that video this instant, I swear to God—"

"Step away from the door, sir."

Two armed security guards from the front lobby stepped off the elevator, their batons unclipped. Behind them stood Evan, holding his phone, recording the entire confrontation.

My father froze. He looked at the guards, then at Evan's camera, and realized his intimidation tactics were worthless now.

"Erica," my mother sobbed, her voice dropping into a pathetic whine. "Kayla has warrants out for her arrest. If she goes to jail, her life is over! Please... she's your sister!"

"Kayla stopped being my sister the day she pushed a six-year-old into the deep end and laughed," I said softly. "And you stopped being my parents when you decided one daughter's vanity was worth the other daughter's life."

I shut the door and slid the deadbolt home.

Through the wood, I heard the guards escorting them down the hall, their muffled protests echoing away into nothingness.
