Chapter 3 - The Family Ultimatum

The diner's neon lights had barely faded into the gray dawn when my phone began to vibrate relentlessly against the tabletop.
*Mom.*
I stared at the caller ID. Evan watched me silently, giving me space to decide. I swiped the screen and pressed speakerphone.
"Erica Lynn!" My mother’s voice came through sharp, shrill, and laced with theatrical outrage. "Where on earth are you? Have you lost your mind? Why aren't you answering your door?"
"I'm out, Mom," I said, keeping my voice utterly level.
"Well, get back to your apartment immediately. We have a crisis, and you need to fix it," she snapped, not even bothering to ask how my lungs felt, or if the hospital had cleared me. "Kayla woke up at the resort completely alone. Evan took off like a coward in the middle of the night. She is in hysterics! The bridal suite was supposed to be paid through Tuesday, and the front desk just told her the reservation was canceled!"
"Did she tell you why he left?" I asked.
"Because of you and your ridiculous drama!" Mother hissed. "Kayla told us everything. She was playing a wedding prank—a harmless, joyful tradition—and you made a giant public scene, acting like you were dying. You embarrassed her in front of his wealthy colleagues, Erica! Now Evan is having some sort of cold-feet panic attack, and Kayla thinks you poisoned his mind."
I let out a breath that sounded like dry laughter. "A harmless prank? Mom, I almost drowned. I told her twice before the ceremony that my phobia was worse than ever."
"Oh, stop being so dramatic! The pool was five feet deep! You could have just stood up!"
"The deep end was nine feet, Mom. I was at the drop-off."
"Whatever! The point is, you survived, didn't you?" Mother sneered. "Now listen to me carefully. Kayla says Evan was seen talking to you in the lobby before he disappeared. If you know where he is, you will tell us right now. And you will post a public apology on your social media, explaining that the pool incident was an accident, a misunderstanding, so his family stops asking questions."
"And if I don't?"
Silence stretched over the line for a brief second before my mother's voice turned venomously cold.
"If you ruin this marriage for your sister, Erica, you are dead to this family. We will cut you off completely. We will tell everyone in town what kind of jealous, spiteful creature you are. You will have no home, no family, and no support. Do you understand me?"
I looked up at Evan. His jaw was set like granite, his eyes burning with disgust. He shook his head slowly, appalled by the sheer toxicity of the woman who had birthed me.
"I understand perfectly, Mother," I said calmly. "Better than I ever have."
Before she could bark another order, I hung up and blocked her number. Then I blocked my father's.

"First step?" Evan asked, his voice steady.
"First step," I replied, sliding my laptop into my bag, "is meeting your lawyer."
