Chapter 10 - Retribution in the Shadows

The subterranean vault was freezing, but a hot, electric tension hummed in the air between us.
Behind the four-inch steel door, the muffled sounds of gunfire were finally dying down, replaced by the occasional hollow crack of single, finishing shots. But there was no telling who had won the battle above. Marco could be dead. The syndicate contractors could be cutting through the ceiling vents right above our heads.
I kept my eyes locked onto Alvarez’s pupils. The man’s hands were steady, but the slight twitch in his left temple gave him away. He was a creature of air-conditioned courtrooms and backroom political payoffs; this wet, violent underworld was foreign to him, forced upon him by Camila’s defiance.
"You think killing my son solves your problem, Alvarez?" I said, deliberately keeping my tone level, measured, buying every second I could. "The federal prosecutors already have the mirror copies of the drive. Marco transmitted the first partition before we left the cathedral."
Alvarez’s eyes narrowed, a flash of doubt crossing his face. "You're lying. The signal was blocked by the cathedral's stone architecture. My communications jammer was active within thirty seconds of the breach."
"Then why did the federal tactical units arrive so fast?" I countered, taking a subtle half-step to the left, angling Alvarez away from Dr. Méndez. "You think you were playing us? Camila knew you were dirty three months ago. The moment her father died, she sent a sealed dossier to the Office of the Special Prosecutor."
Alvarez’s thumb tightened against the hammer of his revolver, clicking it back into full cock. The metallic snap sounded like a cannon shot in the small concrete space.
"It doesn't matter what they have in the capital," Alvarez hissed, his voice losing its aristocratic polish. "Without the physical original and the living heir, the trust defaults to Teresa's conservatorship under provincial statute 402. I wrote the statute myself! The courts will be tied up in probate appeals for twenty years! By the time anyone sorts it out, the accounts will be drained, the land transferred, and I will be living under a different name in Dubai!"
"And what about my wife?" I snarled, the image of Camila lying cold in her casket flashing behind my eyes. "What did you do to her in that hospital room?"
Alvarez smiled—a thin, cruel razor-line across his face.
"She was awake, you know," he whispered. "At the very end. Teresa was holding her hands, pretending to pray, while Varga injected the potassium solution into her central line. Camila looked right at me. She couldn't speak—the paralytic had already seized her vocal cords. But her eyes... she was begging for her child."
A white-hot blinding fury exploded in the core of my soul.
"And do you know what I told her?" Alvarez whispered, relishing the sadistic control. "I leaned over the railing and told her that her baby was already dead. That he died twenty minutes before she did. That her entire bloodline was wiped out."
"You monster," Dr. Méndez gasped from behind me, tears of revulsion streaming down her face.
"No," Alvarez said, shifting his aim slightly toward my chest, toward where Leo was strapped. "Just a businessman protecting his margins."
He squeezed the trigger.
In that millisecond, I didn't try to dodge. I twisted my torso sharply, absorbing the movement, and dove forward.
*BANG.*
The deafening roar of the gunshot filled the vault. The bullet slammed into the reinforced ceramic trauma plate of my tactical vest, right over my left shoulder, just inches clear of Leo’s swaddled head. The kinetic impact felt like a sledgehammer breaking against my collarbone, knocking the breath completely out of my lungs.
I hit the concrete floor hard, rolling onto my right hip to keep my weight entirely off my son.
Alvarez, shocked that I was still moving, raised the revolver to fire a second shot directly into my skull.
Before he could pull the trigger, Dr. Méndez screamed. With the desperate strength of a woman pushed past her breaking point, she swung the heavy steel fire extinguisher with both hands, smashing it brutally against the side of Alvarez’s knees.
Bone snapped with a sickening crunch.
Alvarez shrieked, collapsing sideways onto the wet stone floor, his revolver skittering across the concrete into the dark.
I didn't give him a chance to recover.
Ignoring the blinding, searing agony in my shattered shoulder, I lunged forward on my knees. I pinned Alvarez’s chest to the floor with my forearm, driving the cold steel barrel of my Glock deep into the soft hollow beneath his jaw.
"Look at me," I roared, my face inches from his.
Alvarez was hyperventilating, his eyes bulging in pure, unadulterated terror as his hands clawed uselessly at my wrist. The smell of his expensive cologne mixed with the copper stench of his blood.
"Camila looked at you when she died," I whispered, my voice dropping to a deathly, venomous calm. "Now look at her husband."
"Wait... please..." he choked out, spit dribbling down his chin. "I can give you the accounts... fifty million... untouched... in bearer bonds... you and the boy can disappear..."
"My wife gave her life so this child wouldn't inherit a world built on your blood money," I said, my finger tightening on the trigger. "You aren't walking out of this tunnel, Alvarez."
"Julián! Hold!"
The heavy vault door creaked.
Marco stumbled into the chamber, his tactical gear shredded, covered in black soot and arterial blood, clutching his side. Behind him stood six federal tactical operators in full combat gear, their night-vision scopes glowing green in the dim light.
Marco looked down at Alvarez pinned beneath my gun, then looked at me, his eyes solemn.
"Don't do it, brother," Marco said quietly, breathing heavily. "If you pull that trigger, you become what they are. Teresa is already in federal custody. Rodrigo just signed a full confession to avoid the death penalty. We have the hospital logs. We have the poison receipts. Alvarez doesn't get the mercy of a quick bullet in a dark tunnel."
Marco stepped forward, resting his hand gently on my wounded shoulder.
"He spends the rest of his life in a supermax federal penitentiary, watching Camila’s son dismantle everything he ever built."
I stared into the terrified, weeping eyes of the man who orchestrated my wife’s murder. Every nerve in my body screamed to end him, to pull the trigger and avenge the agony Camila suffered in her final moments.
Then, from beneath my vest, Leo let out a soft, sweet coo.
The sound broke through the red haze of my fury.
May you like
I slowly eased my finger off the trigger. I lowered the hammer of the gun.
"Cuff this piece of garbage," I said coldly, standing up and turning my back on him. "Get him out of my sight."
