Chapter 4 - The Web of Greed

We moved back down to the secure server room in the hospital basement, where Dr. Méndez kept an encrypted terminal completely disconnected from the provincial hospital network.

"I managed to preserve blood and tissue samples from Camila before Dr. Varga’s transport team took her body to the funeral home," Ana said, typing rapidly on the keyboard. "I split the vials into three sets. One is in my personal deep-freeze unit. The second is already en route to the Federal Forensics Directorate in the capital via an independent armored courier. The third is right here."

She opened a steel lockbox beneath the desk, revealing two chilled vials of dark blood and a signed chain-of-custody document bearing the seal of the National Medical Examiner.

"This is conclusive proof of homicidal poisoning," Ana stated firmly. "The digitalis levels are four hundred times above therapeutic threshold. But Julián, you have to understand who you are fighting. Your mother doesn't just control the vineyards. The provincial chief of police, Judge Alvarez, and the regional prosecutor are all board members of the Del Valle Foundation. If you walk into the local precinct with these vials, the evidence will vanish before you reach the front desk, and you will be arrested for a fabricated crime before sundown."

"I’m not going to the local police," I replied, pulling the microSD card from my pocket and sliding it into the terminal’s reader. "Camila thought of that months ago."

The screen flashed green as the drive unlocked.

Camila had been a forensic accountant before we married. When Rodrigo had tried to force through the sale of the southern estate to a dummy corporation based in Panama, she had spent six months tracing the money trail.

Folder after folder unfurled across the high-resolution monitor: offshore accounts, falsified export bills of lading, and illicit transactions funneled through a private bank in Zurich. But what made my blood run cold was a subfolder titled: *Project Inheritance.*

I clicked it open.

A high-definition video appeared on the screen. The timestamp showed it had been recorded twelve days ago, captured by a hidden pinhole camera Camila had installed behind the books in the villa's library.

The video showed my mother, Teresa, seated on the velvet sofa, holding a crystal glass of scotch. Standing opposite her was Dr. Hector Varga and my brother Rodrigo.

*“The terms of my father-in-law’s will are intolerable,”* Teresa’s voice sounded crisp through the speakers. *“He never forgave me for taking over the management after my husband died. Leaving fifty-one percent of the voting shares to Julián’s firstborn child was an act of senile spite.”*

*“The paperwork for the legal guardianship is prepared, Doña Teresa,”* Dr. Varga replied, adjusting his spectacles. *“If Camila suffers fatal cardiac failure during delivery, and the infant is declared stillborn due to lack of maternal oxygenation, the trust reverts directly to the surviving direct ascendant—you.”*

Rodrigo had stepped forward into the frame, tapping a stack of legal documents against his knuckles. *“And Julián? He’s too weak to fight us. If he loses both of them in a single night, he’ll sign whatever power of attorney we put in front of him. We send him to a sanitarium in Switzerland for six months to ‘recover,’ and by the time he comes back, the land is sold and the capital is safely in Zurich.”*

*“Make sure there are no marks on her arms,”* Teresa had instructed coldly. *“The coffin will be open for the morning vigil. Our friends from the ministry will be attending. I want her to look peaceful. A tragic, unavoidable loss.”*

The video ended.

Ana gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "My God... they planned the entire thing down to the minute."

"Not the entire thing," I said, opening my fist to reveal the silver cufflink. "They didn't plan on Camila fighting back."

I pointed to the cufflink’s chipped edge and the dark specks of dried blood.

"When Rodrigo tried to administer the final lethal injection at the house, Camila fought him. She ripped this off his wrist. The blood on this silver isn't hers—it’s Rodrigo's. She scratched him, drew his blood, and sealed it in her hand. His DNA is on the very evidence she took to her coffin."

Ana looked from the cufflink to the monitor, her face hardening. "The scheduled cremation is at ten this morning at the Del Valle family cemetery. In less than four hours, her body will be reduced to ash. If they burn her, the physical proof of the injection site is gone forever. A defense attorney could claim these video files were fabricated with artificial intelligence."

"Then we don't let them burn her," I said, rising to my feet.

"How? Your mother has private security ringed around the entire mortuary chapel. They have private permits. Dr. Varga signed the burial clearance."

"We use their own arrogance against them," I replied, pulling my phone from my pocket and dialing a number I hadn't called in seven years.

The line rang four times before a gruff, gravelly voice answered.

"Director Silva," I said clearly.

A pause on the other end. "Julián? I told you never to call this line unless the family business finally crossed the line into treason."

"It didn't cross into treason, Uncle Marco," I said, addressing my father’s estranged brother, who had left the family empire thirty years ago to serve in the Federal Special Investigations Division. "It crossed into premeditated capital murder. And I have the forensic proof, the video confessions, and the living victim to put Teresa and Rodrigo in federal prison for the rest of their lives."

Silence stretched across the line for five agonizing seconds.

"Where are you?" Marco demanded, his voice instantly snapping into operational authority.

"At St. Jude’s Hospital. But the clock is running. In three hours, they are putting Camila’s body into the incinerator. If you don't intercept that hearse with a federal warrant, my wife's killers walk free."

"I’m thirty minutes away with a tactical unit," Marco said coldly. "Don't move. Keep that child secure. Hell is coming to the Del Valle estate."
