Chapter 9 - The Eviction Notice

Within forty-eight hours, the collapse of my family’s facade was total and absolute.
The story broke across local circles not through gossip, but through public court filings. When Marcus filed the formal fraud and embezzlement charges with the county prosecutor, Darren Vance's name was listed prominently as an unindicted co-conspirator regarding the forged notary seal.
By Thursday afternoon, Miller & Croft terminated Darren’s employment immediately to protect the firm’s reputation.
Friday morning brought the delivery of an expedited foreclosure notice on my parents' four-bedroom colonial. Without my $1,200 monthly cash injection and with Richard’s credit completely ruined, the bank moved with ruthless speed.
I sat at my kitchen island, sipping chamomile tea while Maya napped against my chest in a soft cotton sling. Ethan was reviewing the draft of the restraining order Marcus had advised us to secure against Richard.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was an unlisted local number.
I hesitated, then swiped to accept and put it on speaker. "Hello?"
"Olivia?"
It was Madison. Her voice was cracked, stripped of all its usual condescending cheerfulness. There was no background music, no celebratory clinking of glasses. Only the distant, muffled sound of a crying baby.
"Madison," I said evenly. "How did you get this number?"
"I called Ethan's office," she choked out, sobbing openly. "Olivia, Darren left me. He packed two suitcases, cleared our joint checking account, and walked out this morning. He said his career is over because of Dad and that marrying into this family was the worst mistake of his life."
I remained silent.
"Did you hear me?" Madison screamed through the speaker, her grief instantly curdling into rage. "My husband left me! Leo is only two weeks old, and his father is gone! Are you happy now? Is this what you wanted? To destroy my entire life because you were jealous that Mom and Dad loved me more?!"
Ethan leaned toward the phone, but I held up a hand to stop him.
"Madison," I said, my voice shockingly calm. "Darren didn't leave you because of me. Darren left you because he married you for an inheritance that was never yours to promise. You built your marriage on a lie, financed it with Grandma’s stolen money, and expected me to pay the bill for the rest of my life."
"He's taking the car, Olivia! I don't have money for formula! Mom and Dad are being evicted in thirty days! Where am I supposed to go?"
"You have a college degree, Madison," I said. "The same one Dad refused to pay for when I went to school, forcing me to work two jobs while you got a full ride from Grandma Evelyn's living gifts. You have hands. You have a brain. Go get a job."
"You're a monster," Madison spat, her voice shaking with hatred. "I swear to God, Olivia, Dad isn't going down without a fight. He’s coming for you. He said if he's going to prison, he’s taking everything you love down with him!"
The line clicked dead.
Ethan looked at me, his eyes dark with immediate concern. "That's a direct threat."

"Call the precinct," I said, my heart pounding against my ribs as I looked down at Maya. "Now."
