Chapter 5 - The Mask Slips

Richard's face transformed from nervous embarrassment into pure, venomous rage. The grandfatherly mask slipped completely off, revealing the bitter, entitled man beneath.

"You think you’re so clever, don’t you?" Richard snarled, throwing his plastic cup into the metal trash can with a loud clang. "You think Evelyn actually wanted your kid to have that money? Evelyn was senile! She didn't know what she was doing when she wrote that clause into the trust!"

"Dad, stop!" Madison whined from the bed, clutching her baby protectively. "You're ruining Leo's special day! Everything was supposed to be perfect!"

"No, Madison, I won't stop!" Richard barked, pacing the small open floor between the floral arrangements. "Olivia doesn't need that money! She married an executive! They live in a three-bedroom townhome! Meanwhile, you and Darren are trying to buy into the country club neighborhood to build Darren’s practice! Leo carries our family's future prestige! Olivia’s daughter doesn't need millions of dollars!"

"Her name is Maya," I said, my voice trembling with profound disgust. "Her name is Maya, and she is your granddaughter. But to you, she’s just an obstacle to a paycheck."

"Evelyn's trust was meant to keep this family unified!" Helen chimed in, tears of manufactured sympathy welling in her eyes as she rushed to my father's side. "Olivia, be reasonable! If Maya takes the trust, Madison gets nothing. Think about your sister! She has always been delicate. You’ve always been the strong one, the capable one. You don't need Grandma’s money. Give it to Leo. For the family."

"For the family?" I repeated, looking around the room filled with four-tiered cakes, balloon arches, and people who hadn't spared ten seconds to see if my baby was breathing. "When has this family ever done a single thing for me?"

"We raised you!" Richard roared, stepping toward my wheelchair, his finger pointed inches from my face. "We gave you a roof over your head! We made you into the woman who can earn that money! You owe this family your loyalty, Olivia! If Ethan doesn't sign that surrender, you are dead to me. Do you hear me? Dead!"

Ethan stepped between us, his arm forming an impenetrable barrier between my father and me. "Back up, Richard. Right now."

Richard scoffed, but he took half a step back. "You think you can bully me? I am the executor of Evelyn’s primary estate! You can't touch that money without my sign-off anyway!"

"Actually, Richard, you aren't," Ethan said calmly, pulling out his smartphone and tapping the screen. "You were the alternate executor. You were only authorized to manage the trust if Grandma Evelyn’s designated first-choice administrator was unable or unwilling to serve."

Richard froze. Helen’s jaw dropped.

"What are you talking about?" Richard muttered, a sheen of cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. "I'm her only surviving son!"

May you like

"And Grandma Evelyn knew exactly what kind of son you were," Ethan replied smoothly. "Olivia, do you want to tell him, or should I?"
