Chapter 7 - Desperate Measures

"Clara," Julian whispered. The rage in his voice vanished instantly, replaced by a grotesque, oily desperation that made my skin crawl. "Clara, look at me. You wouldn't do this. We’ve been married for twenty years. We built our lives together."

He stood up, walking around the table toward me, his hands outstretched in supplication. His high-priced lawyers looked away, embarrassed by the pathetic spectacle of their client unraveling in real time.

"I made mistakes, Clara," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with manufactured grief. "I was weak. The pressure of managing the family empire, my mother’s illness... it broke me! Chloe was nothing! A momentary distraction! A midlife crisis! You know that Eleanor was difficult, she was demanding, she drove us both crazy! But you and I... we are partners!"

"Partners?" I asked, my voice slicing through his speech like a razor.

"Yes! Partners!" he said, dropping to one knee beside my chair, trying to take my hand. I pulled it away as if he were a leper. "Think of everything we survived together! If you take the company, the board will tear you apart! You don't know corporate governance, Clara! You don't know how to run a private equity portfolio! Let me stay on as managing director. We can fix our marriage. We can go to counseling. We’ll take a real vacation, just the two of us, anywhere you want in the world!"

I looked down at the man I had loved for two decades. The man whose shirts I had ironed, whose lies I had endured, whose emotional neglect I had rationalized as 'executive stress.'

"Do you know what Eleanor’s last words were, Julian?" I asked.

Julian swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically. "She... she was thinking of me, wasn't she? She was asking for her son?"

"She looked at me while Chloe’s laugh came through the speaker of my phone," I whispered, leaning in close so only he could hear. "She held my hand with the last ounce of strength in her body, looked me dead in the eye, and whispered: *Destroy him.*"

Julian’s face went gray. All the blood drained from his features.

"She didn't love you at the end, Julian. She despised you. She despised you because you weren't just a bad son; you were a coward. You couldn't even look her in the eye while you waited for her to die."

Julian slowly rose from his knee. The pleading expression melted away, replaced by a snarl of pure venom. "You think you’ve won, Clara? You think you can walk out of here with my father’s name, my mother’s money, and my life? I will tie you up in litigation until you are bankrupt! I will bury you in so many injunctions you won't be able to buy a loaf of bread without court approval!"

Before he could take another step toward me, the conference room door swung open.

Two federal agents in dark suits stood in the entryway, flanked by two uniformed Boston police officers.

The lead agent pulled a gold badge from his jacket pocket. "Julian Sterling?"

Julian froze. "Yes?"
