Chapter 6 - Eleanor’s True Will

The conference room at Vance & Sterling Legal Associates was freezing cold. The walls were lined with leather-bound legal volumes dating back to the late nineteenth century, smelling of old leather and uncompromising authority.
Julian sat on the far side of the massive mahogany table, flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys in bespoke charcoal suits. He had spent the morning trying to project confidence, wearing his tailored navy suit, but the dark circles under his eyes betrayed him. Chloe was nowhere to be seen.
I sat alone beside Arthur Vance. In front of me was a single, sealed manila envelope bearing the red wax seal of the Probate Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
"We can dispense with the theatrics, Arthur," Julian said loudly, leaning back in his leather chair. "My mother was legally incompetent for the last eighteen months of her life. My medical experts have already reviewed her hospital intake charts from St. Jude’s. Whatever codicil or modified declaration you claim she executed during that period is dead on arrival. We will file for summary judgment by noon."
Arthur Vance didn't even look up from his reading glasses. He simply unclasped the brass seal on the envelope with a silver letter opener.
"Your mother foresaw that argument, Julian," Arthur said calmly. "Which is why, two years ago, she voluntarily submitted to a comprehensive psychiatric and cognitive evaluation at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Three independent neuro-psychologists certified her as possessing total, unimpaired executive cognitive function. In fact, her IQ and memory retention tests scored in the ninety-eighth percentile."
Julian’s lead attorney, a hawk-faced litigator named Henderson, frowned and leaned forward. "A routine cognitive clearance doesn't negate the presumption of undue influence from a primary caregiver residing in the home."
"It does when the caregiver had no knowledge of the document's contents," Arthur countered smoothly. He pulled out a certified document with Eleanor’s unmistakable, sharp cursive script running across the top. "On November 14th of last year, Eleanor Sterling established the *Eleanor Vance-Sterling Irrevocable Living Trust*. She transferred all controlling voting shares of Vance-Sterling Enterprises, the real estate portfolio, and the liquid reserves into this vehicle."
Arthur looked directly into Julian’s eyes.
"Julian, would you like me to read the specific clause concerning you?"
Julian’s throat bobbed. "Read it."
Arthur cleared his throat and read aloud:
*'To my only biological son, Julian Sterling, who abandoned his filial duties, who sought to consign me to a locked ward while plundering the philanthropic works of his ancestors, and who spent my final hours on earth indulging in debauchery while I suffocated in an emergency ward: I leave you exactly one dollar, contingent upon your complete surrender of all company badges and executive privileges within twenty-four hours of my demise.'*
The conference room went dead silent. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning.
"That’s impossible," Julian croaked, his voice cracking. "That’s... that’s legally unenforceable! She cannot disinherit her sole heir!"
"She can under the explicit terms of the 1994 Family Charter," Arthur replied, sliding a copy of the charter across the table. "Which states that any heir who engages in criminal financial misconduct against the foundation forfeits all claim to the ancestral corpus."
"And who did she leave it to?" Julian yelled, slamming his open palms onto the table, his composure entirely shattered. "Who gets the eighty million dollars, Arthur? You?"
Arthur looked at me, his eyes softening with deep respect.
"Every single share, every property, and the entire balance of the family fortune has been transferred unconditionally to Clara Sterling. She is the sole trustee, the chief executive of the foundation, and the majority owner of the firm."

Julian stared at me, his mouth hanging open, looking as though he had been hit by a freight train.
