Chapter 9 - The Syringe in the Sleeve

Adrian moved instantly, planting his six-foot-two frame in front of the door to Room 4. "You're not touching my mother, Voss. Get the hell out of this hospital before I have the chief of surgery throw you out."

"Adrian, please don't make a scene," Dr. Voss said calmly, opening the manila folder. "Judge Holbrook signed the interim order at six-thirty this morning based on Evelyn’s acute cognitive decline and the substantial risk of domestic interference. Miss Montgomery is the designated conservator under the revised durable power of attorney executed last Tuesday."

"That document is a forgery!" Adrian barked.

"That is for probate court to decide next month," the woman in the navy suit interjected smoothly. "I am Rachel Vance, legal counsel for the Montgomery estate. Right now, this order is active and enforceable. Security, please clear the doorway so Dr. Voss can prepare the patient for transport."

The two private security guards stepped forward, their hands resting on their utility belts. They weren't hospital staff; their badges bore the emblem of a private Manhattan firm frequently employed by high-stakes corporate fixers.

Naomi didn't look at the guards. She didn't look at the lawyer. She looked directly at Dr. Voss's right coat pocket.

There was a subtle, unnatural sag in the heavy wool. The outline of a rigid plastic casing pressed against the fabric.

"What's in the pocket, Doctor?" Naomi asked, her voice cutting through the rising shouting match like a surgical blade.

Voss stiffened. "I beg your pardon?"

"Greenwich Memorial regulations strictly forbid private physicians from carrying uncatalogued injectables into the ICU," Naomi said, taking a step toward him. "Every milligram of medication administered in this wing must pass through the automated pharmacy dispensary on the third floor. What did you bring from your private clinic, Dr. Voss?"

"Naomi, stay back," one of the guards warned, extending an arm.

Inside Room 4, the sudden shrill beep of a cardiac monitor broke the tension.

*Beep. Beep. Beep-beep-beep.*

The line on the bedside telemetry screen visible through the glass spiked erratically. Evelyn’s heart rate was climbing: 110, 125, 140. Inside the room, the figure on the bed began to convulse, her hands clawing against the soft wrist restraints.

"She's having a secondary stroke!" Dr. Voss yelled, trying to push past Adrian. "Out of my way, Adrian! If I don't administer a neuro-stabilizer immediately, her brain stem will herniate!"

"No!" Adrian roared, shoving Voss back against the opposite wall.

In the chaos, Celeste moved with terrifying speed.

While Adrian wrestled with the guard who tried to pin his arms, Celeste slipped beneath the security guard's outstretched elbow, grabbed the metal handle of Room 4's sliding glass door, and wrenched it open.

"Celeste, get away from her!" Adrian screamed, throwing his weight against the guard and slamming him into the door frame.

Celeste was already inside. Her coat was off. From her inner sleeve, she slipped a pre-filled glass syringe with a three-inch gauge needle—not a clinical sedative, but a concentrated vial of potassium chloride, stolen from Voss’s private bag during the scuffle.

"She dies now, Adrian, or we both go to federal prison!" Celeste snarled, her face twisted in pure, feral madness as she raised the syringe toward Evelyn's central IV line port. "You think you can cast me out back to the gutter? I earned this family's money! I gave two years of my youth to this rotting old bitch!"

Before the needle could puncture the silicone valve of the IV line, a hand caught Celeste by the hair and yanked her backward with violent, bone-rattling force.

It was Naomi.

Naomi had bypassed the guards, slipping through the gap like smoke. With a brutal twist of her hips, she swung Celeste around and slammed her against the bedside stainless-steel tray. The metal cart overturned with a deafening crash, scattering sterile gauze, iodine swabs, and plastic tubes across the linoleum.

The syringe flew from Celeste's grip, skittering across the floor and shattering against the baseboard, spraying clear, deadly fluid across the tiles.

"Don't you dare touch her," Naomi breathed, pinning Celeste by both wrists against the hospital bed. "You aren't fit to breathe the same air as this woman."

Celeste thrashed, spitting, her manicured nails raking across Naomi's forearm, drawing four parallel beads of blood. "Get off me, you old parasite! Adrian, pull her off me!"

Adrian burst through the doorway, having broken free from the guard outside. He didn't look at Celeste. He went straight to the bed and stood over his mother.
