Chapter 10 - The Awakening

The room fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence.

The cardiac monitor continued to hum, but the erratic rhythm slowly smoothed out as Evelyn’s chest rose and fell in ragged, shallow gasps. Her head turned slowly on the pillow. Her pale, sunken face, framed by wisps of silver hair, was drenched in sweat.

Her gaze passed Adrian, passed the overturned tray, and landed straight on Celeste Montgomery, who was still pinned beneath Naomi's relentless grip.

"E-Evelyn..." Celeste choked out, her voice suddenly trying to revert to that trembling, innocent whine. "Evelyn, thank God you're awake! Naomi attacked me! She tried to tamper with your IV—"

Evelyn Vale did not speak. The breathing tube was still taped securely into her trachea, preventing words from forming.

Instead, Evelyn lifted her right hand.

The arm trembled violently, the skin paper-thin and purpled with hematomas from countless needle pricks. But the movement was deliberate. Unflinching.

She didn't point at Naomi.

Her bony, trembling index finger rose, extending straight toward Celeste's face.

Then, with an agonizing effort that drew a wet, rattling gasp from her chest, Evelyn brought her hand down onto the bed rail, tapping it three times—a code she and Naomi had used decades ago when Evelyn’s father had suffered his final stroke.

*Danger. Intruder. Remove.*

Naomi did not release her grip. Her eyes bore into Celeste. "You heard her, Miss Montgomery. The mistress of the house has dismissed you."

Outside in the hallway, the sound of heavy boots echoed down the corridor. Two uniformed Greenwich Police Department officers, flanked by the hospital's Chief of Medical Staff, entered the room with their tasers unholstered.

"Greenwich Police! Nobody move! Step back from the bed!"

"Officer, arrest her!" Dr. Voss stammered from the doorway, his tie askew, his face white as chalk. "That woman assaulted Miss Montgomery—"

"Quiet, Voss," the Chief of Staff barked, his voice booming with absolute authority. "Dr. Voss, your clinic license was suspended by the State Medical Board twenty minutes ago. Detective Ramirez is waiting for you in the lobby. Step out into the hall and place your hands on your head."

Dr. Voss’s jaw dropped. He looked at the lawyer, Rachel Vance, but the woman had already slipped her manila folder under her arm and was backing swiftly toward the elevators, refusing to make eye contact with anyone.

Adrian stepped forward, his eyes burning with tears of rage and relief. He took his mother’s trembling hand in both of his. "Mom. I’m here. I’m right here. She will never hurt you again."

Evelyn squeezed his fingers with surprising strength. Her eyes drifted to Naomi, softening into a look of profound, unspoken gratitude.

The officers pulled Celeste off the floor, securing her wrists in heavy steel handcuffs behind her back. Her pristine designer coat was smeared with betadine; her blonde hair was tangled and wild.

"Adrian, you can't do this!" Celeste screamed, kicking against the floor as the officers dragged her toward the threshold. "You have no idea what you're doing! The money is gone! The contracts are already signed! Even if your mother lives, the Vale estate belongs to them!"

"To who, Celeste?" Adrian demanded, stepping toward her. "To your father? He’s bankrupt!"

Celeste threw her head back, laughing hysterically as the elevator doors chimed in the distance.

"Not my father, you blind fool!" she shrieked, her voice echoing down the entire ICU corridor. "Ask your precious housekeeper! Ask Naomi who paid for my father's debts! Ask her who bought the mortgage on the Vale mansion three days ago!"

Adrian froze. He slowly turned his head to look at Naomi.

Naomi stood by Evelyn’s bedside, her face completely unreadable, her hands folded neatly over the black satchel.
