Chapter 6 - Public Disgrace

The Grandview Country Club was aglow with crystalline chandeliers, the soft strains of a string quartet, and the clinking of champagne flutes. Over two hundred of the city’s elite—judges, corporate executives, city council members, and prominent investors—mingled across the polished marble floor.

At the center of the grand ballroom stood Robert Carter, holding court.

Despite the financial noose tightening around his neck, my father had managed to mask his panic behind a facade of bravado. He held a glass of vintage champagne, laughing loudly at a joke made by a municipal commissioner. Beside him stood Ethan, dressed in an ill-fitting velvet dinner jacket, constantly fidgeting with his cuffs, his eyes darting toward the main entrance with paranoid intensity.

Ethan’s phone vibrated in his pocket every thirty seconds. Drake was outside, waiting for his payment.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Robert’s voice suddenly boomed through the microphone as he took the elevated stage at the front of the ballroom. The string quartet faded to a stop, and the chatter in the room softened to a respectful murmur.

Robert beamed, soaking in the spotlight he craved more than air itself.

"Thank you all for joining us on this momentous evening," Robert began, projecting the booming charisma that had fooled the public for decades. "Fifty years ago, the Carter name began with modest ambitions. But tonight, Carter Enterprise stands as a titan of logistics, innovation, and integrity. We are a family company built on tradition, honor, and loyalty."

Ethan puffed out his chest, stepping up to the edge of the stage.

"Tonight," Robert continued, gesturing warmly to his son, "I have the profound privilege of announcing the next chapter of our legacy. As CEO, I am officially naming my son, Ethan Carter, as Executive Vice President of Strategic Growth, effective immediately!"

Polite applause rippled through the room, though a few seasoned board members standing near the back exchanged skeptical glances.

"Ethan represents the new generation," Robert proclaimed, his chest swelling. "A man of vision, dedication, and unyielding commitment to the Carter family values—"

The heavy double doors at the rear of the ballroom slammed open with a concussive boom that echoed off the vaulted ceiling.

The applause died instantly. Two hundred heads turned in unison.

Walking through the threshold was not a broken, defeated son.

I stepped into the light of the grand chandeliers wearing a custom midnight-blue tuxedo, my posture erect, my eyes locked directly onto Robert. Beside me walked Harrison Vance, flanked by four federal process servers carrying black leather folios.

And walking behind us, his silver cane striking the marble with rhythmic, terrifying authority, was Walter Carter.

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

"Walter?" Robert whispered into the live microphone, his voice trembling so violently that a screech of static tore through the speakers. "Father... what are you doing here?"

Walter did not answer. He slowly marched down the central aisle, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before an ancient king. I walked at his right shoulder, every eye in the room fixed upon the faint, lingering shadow of the slap mark Robert had left on my face five days ago.

Ethan went completely pale, his hands shaking so hard his champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the stage floor in a shower of crystal and sparkling wine.

"You speak of honor, Robert?" Walter’s voice carried without the aid of a microphone, filling every corner of the vast room with absolute dominance. "You speak of integrity? You dare speak of family values while standing on a stage paid for by my sweat, peddling a coward as a leader?"

"Father, please!" Robert hissed, stepping off the stage, his face flushed with sudden humiliation. "This is a private matter! We have guests! The press is here!"

May you like

"Let the press listen," Walter boomed, raising his cane and pointing the silver tip straight at Robert’s heart. "Because tonight, the world will finally see what you truly built."

Walter signaled Vance. With terrifying efficiency, Vance stepped up to the podium, plugged a high-capacity thumb drive into the presentation system, and hit a single key.
